Intricate, handmade toys – including miniature scenes of old Beijing – are sold here by a family who has been making toys for over 150 years. The wares work better as souvenirs than actual toys. Look for the giant toy statue outside the shop.

LEGATION QUARTER WALK

The Legation Quarter was where the 19th-century foreign powers had their embassies, schools, banks and churches. The area still has a distinct European flavour, with imposing buildings set back from tree-lined streets, and it’s a great place for a stroll after the hustle of nearby Tiananmen Sq. Begin at the far western end of Dongjiaomin Xiang and head east along Dongjiaomin Xiang. Look out especially for the Gothic St Michael’s Church, at the junction with Taijichang Dajie, where services are still held.

Wangfujing Dajie 王府井大街 235 号; 9.30am-9.30pm; Wangfujing

The shelves here groan with an ever-improving range of English-language fiction and non-fiction, as well as translations of Chinese classics and Lonely Planet guides. It’s a good place to pick up a map of Beijing (Y8).

Slap in the middle of the trendy Nanluogu Xiang hutong, Grifted has a wide selection of tongue-in-cheek souvenir options, most made locally. Check out the dolls of Mao, Marx and Lenin; communist icons reinvented as soft toys. T-shirts, Mao-print cushions and quirky umbrellas are available too.

Beautiful, hand-embroidered qipao (traditional Chinese dresses) can be ordered here. The quality is superb and Lu Ping is one of the few Chinese designers still specialising in making them. He does menswear too. Call ahead to make an appointment.

PLASTERED T-SHIRTS 创可贴 T- 恤 Clothing

Rather than keeping your Beijing subway ticket, or that bottle of Yanjing beer, as a souvenir, you can pick up a T-shirt (from Y98) that displays it, as well as shirts featuring other local icons and slogans.

SCAM ALERT!

Most Beijing trips are trouble-free, but there are a few scams that visitors should be aware of. Beware of young women inviting you to a traditional tea ceremony, especially around the Qianmen area. They’ll disappear before the bill comes and you’ll be left with a Y2000 tab. Around Wangfujing Dajie, avoid the people who claim to be art students and want you to visit their exhibition. They’re not students and the art’s not worth buying. Finally, be cautious when using independent rickshaw drivers. A few have been known to drive travellers to isolated locations, before demanding more money to drive them back.
