Assignment I.

I. Read Chapter 1, 2 (pp. 2-7).

II. Language Focus:

a) Active Vocabulary: find the following words and phrases in the text and reproduce the
situations from the story. Give some examples of your own using the vocabulary.

to get angry (with)

a true story (about)

to be dead; a dead body; a dead man

to be mad (with, about)

 

b) Word-building / - Iv /. Give the meaning of the italicised words and make up sentences of your
own to illustrate their meaning:

c) Read and memorise the following phrases and speech patterns. Find them in the text. Reproduce the episodes. Make up sentences in Russian for your groupmates to translate.

d) Open the brackets and put the verbs in the correct form:

What do you know about these characters?

d) Describe the Opera House in Paris.

e) Ask and answer questions on the text (4 types).

f) Retell the text оf Chapters 1 and 2.

g) Express your impression of the story (thoughts and emotions it evokes).

While reading find the active words and word combinations in the text. Translate the sentences into Russian. Give some examples of your own using the active vocabulary.

b) Find the appropriate phrases and sentences in the text. Reproduce the situations with them.

2. Она прекрасна, лучшая певица в мире.

3. Он хотел видеть ее возлюбленного - ее врага.

4. Все в жизни шло хорошо.

5. У нее безобразный, как у жабы голос.

6. Почему вы так говорите?

7. Выйдите, пожалуйста все из комнаты. Ей нужен покой.

8. Когда призрак что-нибудь хочет, он должен это получать.

c) Insert prepositions where necessary.

1. The noise...the Opera House went on...along time.

2. He smiled back....his brother.

3. You are...love! But this is your first night...Paris, your firs visit...the opera.

4....him, good families were not important, and young men never listen...their older brothers.

5. He moved...the door, and soon everybody left...the room.

6. How could she say that...him? He waited...some minutes, than he went back...the door...her dressing-room.

7. He waited...the shadows near her room.

8. Raoul waited, but no man came out...her. He looked everywhere -...the chairs....all the clothes,...all dark corners...the room.

9. It was "Faust" again, but...this time...La Carlotta singing Margarita.

 

10. Madame Giry was not afraid...ghosts.

11. The opera ghost is angry-..you.

12. The ghost wants box 5? He can have it...every night.

Word - formation

a) write out all the adverbs with -ly. Say what part of speech they are formed from. Use them in your own examples.

b) Say what part of speech each of these is and form -ly-adverbs (adverbs-adjectives) from it.

Guess their meaning.

III. Activities.

a) While-Reading activities (p. 46 chapters 3, 4)

b)What are the main characters of the story? Find the adjectives describing them in the text. Write out the personality adjectives and divide them into three groups: positive, negative. neutral.

c) Tell what you know about Raoul, Philippe, Christine Daae and the Phantom of the Opera.
Choose some suitable words to characterize each of them from the list below:

Say if the character and the appearance of the personage differ.

d) Say what character is your favourite. Explain why.

e) Give a brief account of the events (from the very beginning of the book).

f) Read about the stylistic device of simile and find some cases of simile in the text.
