The examination card consists of three questions which envisage the foregoing tasks:

1) reading, translating, and doing stylistic analysis of a piece of literary writing; 2) rendering of a text from Ukrainian into English; 3) student’s insight into the problems concerning such topics as Teaching, Exams Taking, US System of Higher Education, Crime & Punishment. Courts & Trials, which focus on the following issues:

1. Do you agree or disagree with the quote: “A student is not a jar to be filled, but a candle to be lit”. Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

2. Is teaching an inherent gift or acquired competence? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

3. Which method of students’ knowledge evaluation would you consider most effective and fair: exams or continuous assessment? Explain why.

 

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad? (Make good use of persuasive techniques while answering).

 

5. Should we totally reshape our higher education system to fit the Bologne Accord requirements or should we decide otherwise? (Make good use of persuasive techniques while answering).

 

6. If you could make a few important changes in the academic life of the university you attend, what changes would you introduce? Give reasons and specific examples to support your opinion.

 

7. Your country is going to build a new university. What campus facilities should be given the main priority? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

8. Why do youngsters become involved in crime? What measures might help to keep the juvenile delinquency rate low? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

9. Do you agree or disagree with the statement: “The stricter the punishment, the lesser the crime rate”? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

10. What features of the American system of higher education would you like to introduce in Ukraine? (Make good use of persuasive techniques while answering).

 

11. What are the most significant psychological and social reasons for a high crime rate in Ukraine and abroad?

 

12. What is your attitude to capital punishment? Do you believe it to be an effective measure to reduce serious crime? (Make good use of persuasive techniques while answering).

 

13. Criminal activity is an inevitable social evil of humanity and can’t be done away with. Express your point of view on this belief giving specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

14. The classroom climate has a tremendous impact on students’ academic progress. How does teacher’s intention influence student’s learning?

 

15. What would you do if you feel aggrieved and decide to sue your offender? Specify the steps of the legal procedure you would start.
