If you are in a country where English is not commonly spoken, finding opportunities to practice your spoken English, and receive help with pronunciation can be difficult. However, wherever you are in the world, you will always be able to find examples of written English. I can't think of a country where you can't buy or borrow novels, newspapers or magazines, or get access to the Internet. It's important to choose a text that you are interested in, not only because it will provide you with the type of vocabulary and structures that you are likely to need, but also because your interest will provide you with the necessary motivation to study actively.

It's also important to choose a text that is at the right level for you - you'll know how difficult it is by reading the first few lines. When you are reading, you should look out for words, phrases and structures that you can use in your own English later. It's a good idea to carry a small notebookwith you so that you can write down any examples that you think might be useful. The first time you read a text, it's usually best not to stop and use your dictionary or notebook. If you read the text quickly and don't worry about the bits you are not sure about, you will get an understanding of the general meaning of the text, and you'll probably be surprised at how much you understand. However, when you have finished reading the text, you should go over the parts that you weren't sure about.By studying these parts, you are not just practicing your English but learning something new. If the problem is an unknown word, you can look it up in a dictionary.

Finally, you should keep another notebook where you can write the notes you have made in your small notebook. You can also include information you have found in grammar books, and lists of useful words. However, you must promise yourself that you will open, read and use this notebook at least once a week because the real key to learning English is to practice, practice, practice!
