The Curriculum

Shell Year

The Shell year (year 9) is a foundation year in which every boy studies a broad range of subjects. In some, such as English, Mathematics and the Sciences, boys begin their (I)GCSE on the first day of lessons. Other subjects offer an introductory course and after two terms boys may opt to continue these at (I)GCSE. The subjects studied are Art, Biology, Chemistry, Design Technology, English, History, Geography, IT, Latin/Classical Civilisation, Mathematics, Music, Religious Studies, Physics and a choice of two languages from Classical Greek, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian or Spanish. Remove and Fifth Form

The Remove and Fifth Form years become that much more exciting and important as all subjects studied are those that boys will take as a (I)GCSE at the end of the Fifth Form. These subjects also provide the foundation for A-level studies and degree choice. Like the Shell year, in the Remove and Fifth Form, boys continue to study cores subjects of English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They must also continue with at least one modern foreign language from a choice of French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin or Russian. Boys then choose four additional subjects from Art, Astronomy, Classical Civilisation, Classical Greek, Design Technology, Drama, Geography, German, History, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies. The Sixth Form

Sixth Formers develop self-motivated work habits and take greater responsibility for their use of time. We offer A-levels in the Sixth Form because we believe that they offer the best preparation for university. We keep a close eye on other developments at this level, including the IB Diploma and the Pre-U, and offer extension work through our super curriculum. In their Lower Sixth year, boys choose four AS-level subjects, one Elective for the Autumn Term and another for the Spring. Some might fit in an additional subject either by studying a language off the timetable or by following Further Maths as part of their Maths A-level. We offer the following subjects: Ancient History, Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classical Greek, Economics, English, French, Geography, German, Government & Politics, History, History of Art, Italian, Latin, Mathematics (and Further Mathematics), Music, Music Technology, Photography, Physics, Religious Studies, Russian, Spanish, Statistics and Theatre Studies. Up to half of the Upper Sixth Form finish School with four or more A-levels. Boys take an Elective in the Autumn term in the subject for which they are applying to university. This offers extension and specialisation and, for many boys, is excellent preparation for their university interview.
