A growing number of wealthy Russian parents from abroad are sending their children to the UK's top private schools like Eton and Harrow (pictured).

Latest figures show there has been a near six per cent rise in t he number of pupils from abroad with Russian families leading the charge. The number of Russian pupils has almost doubled in just five years.

There has also been an increase in the number of pupils from China, Hong Kong, Germany and Spain.

According to some reports, as well as fees that can reach around $48,000 a year, some parents are willing to pay consultants as much as $80,000 in one off payments if they help to place a child at a good school.

Many private schools are also paying agents to attract overseas students with commission of up to 20 per cent of the annual fee in return for every pupil found.

The figures emerged after publication of a census by the Independent Schools Council which showed the first increase in pupil numbers in four years, of just 0.1 per cent..

It found that there are 10,000 more boys at private schools than girls. The figures follow another survey which found that six boarding schools in the UK are charging around $48,000 year

This includes the most famous names of Eton(pictured), Harrow and Winchester which have all had to increase fees over the last five years.

On top of that parents are likely to have find anything up to $8,000 a year for extras such as school trips or specialist lessons in music or sport.

The figures appear to show that one of the most expensive mainstream schools, as opposed to a specialist college, is Queen Ethelburga's College, York, on $53,000 for foreign sixth-formers who also board.

ACS Cobham International School in Surrey also charges a similar sum as does Hurtwood House School in Surrey and the International College, Sherborne, Dorset, which caters for pupils from across the world.

Brian Martin, the provost of Queen Ethelburga 's, said: ”The scale of our growth underlines the fact that we offer value for money in terms of results, how well students are looked after and how happy they are.”

Christopher Greenfield the International College head, said fees paid guaranteed parents small classes and intensive tuition. “In order to do what this college does we have found that classes of about eight students to one teacher are most effective,.”
