Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 26, 2012 when the 84th Academy Awards airs live from Hollywood beginning at 8:30PM on ABC.

It will be presented at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. This year Jennifer Lopez, an American actress, businesswoman, dancer and recording artist together with two time Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks will be the hosts of the ceremony. The Oscar, as the presentation is better known, will be televised in the United States by ABC and to more than 225 countries worldwide.

The nominees for the 84th Academy Awards are announced and as always, there are a lot of surprises, starting with a number of nominees. They are only nine this year. The surprise is that Leonardo Di Caprio, the star of “J. Edgar,”

By the numbers, this year’s most often nominated

Contenders were “Hugo” with 11, followed closely by “The Artist” with 10. “Moneyball” and “War Horse” each had 6 nominations, while “The Descendants,” though strong in the acting, writing and directing categories, had only 5.

The biggest surprise in the group was “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” a drama about the events happening after the September 11 terror attacks. The film was criticized during the pre-Oscar awards, though its sponsors insisted that it was included into a list of best picture contenders.

War Horse”, a 2011war epic motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg is based on War Horse, a children's novel about long friendship between a British boy and his horse Joey before and during World War I. It was written by British author Michael Morpurgo and first published in the UK in1982.

Ms. Streep’s nomination as the Best Actress in “Iron Lady” cemented her position as the most-nominated actor in Academy Awards history, with 17 nominations — far more than Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn, with 12 each. Ms. Streep last won an Oscar in 1983, for best actress

for “Sophie’s Choice,” and she was previously best supporting
