REFUELLERS

Aircraft refuellers can be either a self contained fuel truck, or a hydrant truck or a cart. Fuel trucks are self contained with their own pumps, filters, hoses, etc. A hydrant cart or truck hooks into a central pipeline network and provides fuel to the aircraft.

 

ü Find English words and word combinations corresponding to the Russian ones: тележка, центральная трубопроводная сеть, шланг, автономный топливозаправщик.

 

ü Hydrant systems are considered to be better than self contained fuel trucks. Why?

TUGS AND TRACTORS

The tugs and tractors at an airport have several functions. They are used to move any equipment that cannot move itself. Push-back tugs are used to manoeuvre aircraft backwards into and from parking stands, being attached to the nose wheel and pushing it. Towing tractors or trucks pull aircraft along to their stands.

ü Say what the pictures show.

 

ü Have you ever seen a tow- bar before? Can you explain its function?

 

ü Are tow- bars always used during pushback / towing nowadays?

 

 

DE-ICERS

When there are freezing conditions and precipitation, it is important for an aircraft to be de-iced. There are several de-icing methods:

- mechanical methods (scraping);

- through the application of heat;

- by use of chemicals designed to lower the freezing point of water (various salts or alcohols);

- a combination of these different techniques.

De-icing of aircraft is usually done by de-icing vehicles (de-icers).

 

For your information

De-icing is the process of removing ice from a surface. Anti-icing is the process of preventing ice from forming on a surface.

 

ü Have a look at the picture and say why de-icers are often called «elephants» in jargon.

 

 

 

SNOW REMOVERS

Snow removal operations are carried out by chains of vehicles: a high speed RW sweeper,

a snow plough (BE)/ plow (AmE) and a snow blower.

 

ü Choose the appropriate Russian names for the given types of snow removers:

We say: ü on board a plane NOT on board of a plane   e.g. As soon as I`m on board a plane I always feel sick.   ü board a plane NOT board to a plane synonyms: embark a plane = get/go on board a plane e.g. After going through the gates passengers board / embark / go on boarda plane. ü depart a plane = disembark a plane   BUT deplane → This verb doesn`t require a noun after it.   e.g. All the passengers disembarked / departed the plane before it was towed to the hanger.   BUT All the passengers deplanedsafely to the ground before the aircraft was towed for a thorough inspection.   ü embarka tion (n.) e.g. The embarkation began an hour before departure.
