To P e r f o r m. Bring out your coins (or borrow them if possible) and arrange them in two horizontal rows on the table (photo 1)

Bring out your coins (or borrow them if possible) and arrange them in two horizontal rows on the table (photo 1). The outer row contains five coins while the inner row contains two. Say, “Five little sheep and two nasty thieves.”

Pick up the two coins in the inner row, one in your right hand and the other in your left, and make a fist around each as you say, “The nasty thieves hide behind the bushes until no one is looking.”

Continue, “Now that no one’s around, the thieves sneak out and steal the sheep.” During the following sequence, you must keep yourhands closed loosely into fists so no one can see inside them. Your right hand picks up the first “sheep,” using your right thumb to nip it against

the side of your finger (photo 2) before drawing it completely in-side the fist (photo 3 shows the coin just before it goes completely inside your hand).

Your left hand picks up the sec-ond “sheep” the same way, draw-ing it into the fist with your left thumb.

Your right hand picks up the third “sheep.”

Your left hand picks up the fourth “sheep.”

Your right hand picks up the fifth “sheep.”

You now have three coins in your left hand and four in your right.

Say, “The thieves heard a noise

and got scared, so they put the sheep back.” First, your left hand

puts one of its coins back on the table (let’s call it the first coin).

Then, your right hand puts a second coin back on the table.

Your left hand puts a third coin back on the table.

Your right hand puts a fourth coin back on the table.

Your left hand puts a fifth coin back on the table.

You now have two coins in your right hand and no coins in your left hand. You are one ahead of the audience: they believe you still have one coin in each hand—it gets better.

Continue, “After a minute or two went by, the thieves ran out and grabbed the sheep one more time.”

Your right hand picks up the first “sheep.”

Your left hand picks up the second “sheep.”

Your right hand picks up the third “sheep.”

Your left hand picks up the fourth “sheep.”

Your right hand picks up the fifth “sheep.”

Say, “Then the thieves went to sleep. When they woke up in the morning they were very disappointed to discover that they were sleep-ing together,” open your left hand to reveal only two coins. Conclude,

“... and all the sheep were safe behind the other bush,” as you openyour right hand to reveal five coins.

Ashes 2 Ashes

Criss asks a woman to hold her hands palm down in front of her. He asks the woman to name “right” or “left.” He uses the hand she chooses and asks her to close it into a fist, dropping her other hand to her side. He reaches into an ashtray and takes a small bit of cigarette ash on his finger. He waves his hand over hers, crumpling his fingers, asking her if she felt any heat. She says no. He opens his hand to reveal that the ashes on his finger have vanished. Criss tells her to open her hand—when she does, she discovers that the ashes are now on her palm.
