To P e r f o r m. The same procedure for the preceding three tricks is used to control the key card to be above the chosen card

The same procedure for the preceding three tricks is used to control the key card to be above the chosen card. Place the deck facedown on the table. Say, “Please cut off about half of the deck—it doesn’t have to be exact, of course, just don’t cut off a little packet.” Wait until the per-son does as you ask and cuts off a part of the deck, then say, “Please put the packet you just cut off on the table next to the rest of the deck.”

Continue, “Now, look at the top card of the original packet—the card you cut to.” If the spectator doesn’t quite understand, you canalways indicate with your hands what you want the person to do, but don’t touch the cards yet.

“Please put the card back on top of the packet you cut off.” Oncethat’s been done, say, “Now complete the cut—in other words, pick up

the bottom of the deck and put it on top of your card, burying it.” Theace of spades, your key card, will be directly on top of the card the per-son cut to.

Place the facedown deck into dealing position in your left hand. Begin dealing the cards to the table one at a time, turning each one faceup as you do. Do not deal them into a neat pile—make a sloppy pile so the ends of the cards are sticking out all over the place.

While you are dealing, watch for your key card. When you turn the ace of spades faceup, you know that the very next card is going to be the chosen card. However, don’t pause or hesitate, just continue dealing and remember the identity of the chosen card when you see it. Also, make sure the end of it sticks out from the pile on the table so it remains in view.

After you’ve dealt another four or five cards faceup onto the pile, say, “The next card I turn over will be yours.” Of course, the person will immediately assume you’ve made a mistake because you’ve already turned the chosen card faceup.

However, you do not turn over the next card on the deck. Rather, your right hand immediately goes directly to the chosen card on the table, pulls it out of the spread, and turns it facedown.

Not only does this get a chuckle because of the gag, but it’s also pretty damn mysterious, too.

Quarter Through

Table

Criss removes a coin from his pocket and places it on the table. He picks it up, moves it to a different spot, and then pushes it through the table.
