To P r e p a r e. You need a Post-it notepad and a pen

You need a Post-it notepad and a pen. You can only perform this bit of mind reading when you are

standing close to a wall. It should be about a foot behind you.

To P e r f o r m
Begin by handing both the
notepad and the pen to someone
and say, “Please think of any
number between one and one
thousand. Then turn your back
and write it down on that note-
pad. I’ll turn my back.”
Suit action to words and turn
your back to the spectator so
you’re facing the wall.

Continue, “Have you done that? Good. Now peel your note off the pad, fold it in half, and hand it to me be-hind my back.” Your hands should bebehind you, ready to receive the folded note (photo 1). Clench your hands tightly around the note (photo 2).

Now turn around and face the per-son. Begin to talk about the impossi-bility of being able to determine which number he or she has chosen. At the same time, stick the note onto the wall behind you (photo 3) and unfold it (photo 4). Clench your now-empty hands behind you in exactly the same position they were in before.

Turn around and face the wall, your back once again toward the person. Say,

“It helps me to concentrate if I can’t see your face—watch my hands and concen-trate on the number.” You’ll find that youcan now simply look down and see the number on the open piece of paper stuck to the wall (photo 5).

Close your eyes and begin saying dif-

ferent digits aloud, “I’m getting closer to

your number.” Turn around and face the spectator. Announce the num-ber he or she wrote down. At the same time, your hands pull the Post-it off the wall and fold it in half. Bring your hands around in front of you and hand the note back to the spectator.

Four Tricks with a Key Card

The use of what magicians call a key card allows you to locate cho-sen cards very easily.

Put any card that you can easily remember, such as the ace of spades, on the bottom of the deck. (Or you can simply glance at whatever card happens to be on the bottom of the deck and remember it.)

Now place the deck facedown on the table. Say, “Please cut off about half of the deck—it doesn’t have to be exact, of course, just don’t cut off a little packet.” Wait until the person does as you ask and cuts off apart of the deck, then say, “Please put the packet you just cut off on the table next to the rest of the deck.”

Continue, “Now, look at the top card of the original packet—the card you cut to.” If the spectator doesn’t quite understand, you canalways indicate what you want the person to do with your hands, but don’t touch the cards yet.

“Please put the card back on top of the packet you cut off.” Oncethat’s been done, say, “Now complete the cut—in other words, pick up the bottom of the deck and put it on top of your card, burying it.”

That’s it: follow those instructions and the card you are remembering will be directly on top of the card the person cut to.

The trick, of course, is what to do from here. Here are three ways to produce a miracle.

Card Thought

Turn the deck faceup and spread it across the table. Glance at the cards, looking for the card you’re remembering. When you spot it, look at the card directly to the right—that is the chosen card (photo 1, in which the card you are remembering, your key card, is the ace of spades; the chosen card in this example is the three of clubs—it could be any card when you actually perform the trick).

  Remember the chosen card.
When you do this, do not stare
intently at the deck for too long.
Now square up the cards, then
gaze into the spectator’s eyes and
slowly, slowly act as if you are
reading her mind, “I can see the
card... it’s a... wait... a six...

no... perhaps the three... YES, the three of... I see red, so it must be the... no... definitely black... the three of clubs. You chose the three of clubs.” Of course youwould name the card you see next to your key card—we’re only using the three of clubs as an example.

Helltromism / Muscle Reading

With the cards still spread faceup on the table, you have glanced down and ascertained both the identity and location of the chosen card. Hold out your hand, palm down, with the first finger extended. Ask the person who chose the card to gently hold your wrist (photo 2). Guide your hand above the cards on the table from side to side and all over the cards, your finger

pointing downward like a dows-ing rod. Eventually, after several false dips downward, bring your finger directly down onto the chosen card.

Card Stab

With the cards still spread faceup on the table, you have glanced down and ascertained both the identity and location of the chosen card. Now, using both hands, smush the cards around into a messed-up pile, always keeping your eye on the chosen card.

Now pick up a butter knife and hold it, point down, in your right hand. (Note that you must not do this on a surface that’s fragile, like glass, or valuable, like a nice wooden table. You should put a wooden tray or newspaper under the cards be-fore you start.) Ask the person who chose the card to grasp your right wrist, then hold the knife poised

about two feet above the cards.

Quickly bring your right hand straight down and stab the chosen card (photo 3). Lift the knife straight up—the card will come with it and you can flash the bottom so ev-eryone sees the knife really goes through it (photo 4).

The Next Card I Turn

Over Will Be Yours

After the spectator cuts the deck, remembers a card, and loses it in the deck, Criss is able to find it in an unexpected way.
