To P e r f o r m. Show the paper napkin and tear off three pieces, each about the same size as the pieces you used to make the little balls

Show the paper napkin and tear off three pieces, each about the same size as the pieces you used to make the little balls. Crush each piece into a ball—you should now have three more balls, each the same size as the ones in your pocket. Put the rest of the napkin aside. The only pieces of napkin that are now visible are the three little balls you’ve just made in front of the audience.

Give the three balls to some-one to look at for a moment. At the same time, your right hand sneaks into your right jacket or coat pocket and secretly steals one of the twenty-four little balls.Hold it inside your fingers by curling them a little—the people must not know this ball is hidden in your hand.

Say, “I’m going to put two of these balls in my hand and one in my pocket.” Pick up one of thelittle balls with your right hand (photo 1 is an exposed view) and put it into your left hand. Pick up a second ball and also put it into your left hand, at the same time letting the extra ball drop with it (photo 2 is an exposed view, photo 3 is what the people watching ac-tually see). It will look as if you have simply dropped two balls into your left hand, though there are actually three. Quickly close your left fingers when your right hand moves away.

Pick up the third ball with your right hand and put it in your pocket—only you actually keep the ball hidden inside your right fin-gers as before.

Ask, “How many in my hand?” Someone will say “Two.” Open your left hand to reveal three balls! Turn your left hand over and dump the balls onto the table.

Repeat the entire business a second time. That is, put one ball into

your left hand. As you put the second ball into your left hand, secretly

drop the third (hidden) ball in with

it. Pick up the third ball with your

right hand and actually conceal it in

your hand as you pretend to place

it in your pocket. Open your left

hand to reveal that the third ball

has jumped back.

Repeat the entire business a third time. That is, put one ball into your left hand. As you put the sec-ond ball into your left hand, secretly drop the third (hidden) ball in with it. Pick up the third ball with your right hand and actually conceal it in your hand as you pretend to place it in your pocket. Open your left hand to reveal that the third ball has jumped back.

Now, you should have done something a little differently that last time: when your right hand en-ters your pocket, instead of simply concealing the single ball in your hand, grab as many of the twenty-

four little balls as possible and close your hand around them (photo 4 is an exposed view). It doesn’t matter if you don’t get all of them.

When you bring your right hand out of your pocket, all eyes will be on your left hand because you’ve programmed the people watching to look there at this moment, so don’t worry. Open your left hand and show three balls again.

Say, “I’ll do it a little differently this last time. Perhaps it would be easier to follow if I put the balls in my right hand.” Your left hand putstwo of the balls, one at a time, into your right hand (photo 5). You must be careful here not to expose all the little balls yet. Your left hand can poke the balls in through the top of your fist.

Now, your left hand takes the third ball and places it into your left jacket pocket. Ask someone how many balls are in your right hand. No matter what he or she says, open your right hand and let all the balls pop out for a surprise ending (photo 6).

Criss lays a piece of string on the table, then covers its center with a handkerchief. He borrows a finger ring from someone who’s watching, then he places the finger ring, and a small safety pin, un-der the handkerchief. The ends of the string remain in full view at all times, yet Criss magically links the finger ring onto the string.
