Charming Victorian Hats

Charming Victorian Hats

The charm of Victorian hats, with their masses of beautiful flowers, colorful ribbons (ленты), abundance (изобилие) of feathers, and snippets (орнамент) of lace is apparent in these examples of late 1890s millinery (дамские шляпы).

Clusters (пучки) chiffon (шифон) were as popular as ever, and the manner of applying (наматывание) the fabrics to the wire (проволока) frames was almost as varied as the shapes that were used. Printed floral and fruit designs, as well as embroidered dots, lent distinction to many of the choicest chiffons.

Ribbons, too, were exquisite in their colorings and texture, and many of the smartest hats were trimmed with them, while the laces employed were in cream, ivory, and coffee tints. Ostrich feathers (страусиные перья)continued to be used and were placed under the brims (край) of large hats at the left side and also on top.

This late 1890s millinery creation shows an entire white bird mounted on wires and placed ceremoniously atop a straw (соломенная) Victorian hat. Deep red ribbon is arranged in a large bow (бант) on top of the crown with the bird perched (расположенной) in the center.

Black adds a distinguishing touch (отличительная черта) to this Victorian hat from the late 1890s as it is introduced in the use of black lace on the brim (край), and again in the tower (башенка) of black ostrich feathers appearing from the back of the hat. Bunches (букеты) of red flowers are artistically (мастерски) positioned on the crown (верхушка).
