The possibilities of tourism in England are varied. The Lake District in the North of England, Cornwall with its charming rural landscapes are wonderful places to travel. Cities and towns fascinate by impressive cultural heritage. England offers visitors a stunning collection of unique and unforgettable events. For everyone in England is something interesting to see.

One of the greatest wonders of the world and the mysterious monuments of prehistoric Britain is Stonehenge. It was constructed between 3000 and 2000 BC and is a trace of the ancestors of the British people. It is situated in the southern part of England.

Stonehenge is the remains of a circle of huge standing stones. People transported them from a great distance in the mountains 250 kilometers away! They are very heavy – some weigh about 4 tons.

A number of myths surround them. No one can tell for sure how these giant stones were moved. Who built Stonehenge? How did they build it? Why did they build it? How did people use Stonehenge?

There are many theories about its meaning and actual function: one of them is that the great stones were once used as a Druid temple to worship the sun, and another is a function of the astronomical calendar. Maybe the ancestors used it as a cemetery or a place for studying the stars.

Stonehenge is still a mystery to researchers and to all the descendants. And it is still a special place for everyone. Every year, on June 21st, lots of people go to Stonehenge to celebrate the longest day of the year.
