My friend's name is Katya. She is sixteen and she is my classmate. We have studied in the same school for ten years.

Katya is tall, slim and very pretty. She looks like her mother. Her hair is long and dark and her eyes are big and grey. She is a very nice girl. She is fond of animals and has two pets at home. When I come to her place, I like to play with her cat and dog. Katya has a lot of interesting books at home and I some­times take some of them to read.

Her interests are broad. She collects small toys and has a rich collection of different toy animals. She also collects pic­tures of different cities of the world. She is a good photograph­er herself and always takes pictures of the places she visits.

Katya does well at school, too. She is especially good at Geometry and Algebra and helps me with my homework because I often have problems with these subjects. Besides being hard-working Katya takes part in all class and school activities. She is popular among the girls and boys of our school because she is kind and friendly.

When we have free time we go out together. We go to the cinema or theatre because we have the same tastes in films and plays. On Saturdays we sometimes go to a discotheque. Katya is a good dancer and she enjoys dancing.

Like me, she dreams of becoming a school teacher. We are going to enter a Pedagogical Institute this year.

Among the many friends I have I'd like to speak about Sergei, my best friend. He is nineteen and finished our school two years ago. Sergei is about two metres tall and the girls find him handsome.

When he studied at school, Sergei organized a pop music group and later he entered a music college. Now he is a second-year student. He began to show interest in music in early child­hood because he comes from a family of musicians. Music is our common interest. Sergei has a good collection of record­ings of music to all tastes. We listen to music together and he taught me to appreciate good music. He can play the piano very well and I enjoy his playing. He likes modern music too.

Besides music Sergei is keen on sports. He is a member of the college sports club, and plays in the college football team which takes part in the annual intercollege competitions.

Like all students Sergei reads a lot. He is interested in sci­ence fiction and detective stories. He has a fairly good knowl­edge of English and can read English and American literature in the original. I wish I would be able to do it one day.

Sergei is a very good friend, though he is quick-tempered at times, he is reliable and can always be trusted. His friends often turn to him for help and advice, and he is always willing to share with them all he has: books, tapes, video films and other things.

In spite of having little or no free time he helps his parents about the house and goes shopping. He can cook and iron and takes care of his appearance. He will never leave home unless he is sure he looks smart. We have been friends for many years and he is a model young man for me. I have learned quite a number of useful things from him.
