Chaplin wore an old hat, a coat which was too small for him, and pants which were much too large. He walked in a manner that showed that he had never worn a pair of shoes his own size. He soon became one of the most famous stars in film history. During the era of silent comedies, he was often called “the funniest man in the world“. Chaplin also wrote and directed nearly all his sound pictures. He lived in the United States for more than 40 years. In 1952, Chaplin travelled to Europe and settled with his family in Switzerland. In 1975, Queen Elizabeth 2 declared him a knight.
