Short Summary Of “Appearances Are Destructive”

In “Appearances Are Destructive,” Mark Mathabane presents that independence in United States of America is not always has a positive effect on people’s lives. He argues that nonexistence of dress code in schools leads to school violence and students do not concentrate on studying. He writes about his two sisters who were enrolled by him to American school after they had finished their studying in South Africa. The girls complained that they were preoccupied with clothes, that is never had happened to them in South Africa. They came home in tears and even wanted to change the school. He points that students pay attention not to their minds and knowledge but to what they wear. The author shows an example of effect on teachers as well. They cannot teach in class because of those students who staring at mirrors, painting their nails, combining the hair and so on. From Mathabane’s words girls have wrong view about attracting boys, and think that women can charm men only with too opened dresses. He shows a lot of careers with their own uniforms and that it helps to focus on work. He accomplishes that here is a lot of benefits of dress code in schools especially it creates the proper learning environment.
