1. Pay attention to the position of the subject in the inverted sentences:

Should he call, tell him I’m out. (Type I)

Were I you, I wouldn’t trust her. (Type II)

Had he been told, He would have understood. (Type III: had + subject + Participle II)

2. Pay attention to the position of ‘ not’:

Were it not for your help ….

Should he not answer ….

Had he not been told,…..

3. We can’t use contracted forms with the inversion:

Were it not for your help …. (not ‘weren’t’)

Should he not answer …. (not ‘shouldn’t)

Had he not been told,….. (not ‘hadn’t’)

4. We use only ‘ were’ not ‘was’ in inverted sentences:

Were it notfor your help …. (not ‘was’)
