Description:

Tiszadob is a small, isolated village in the bank of Tisza river, in one of the poorest areas of Hungary, with nice surroundings and noticable cultural heritage. In the Child Protection Centre where the camp takes place there are around 90 youngsters living together from various age groups, mainly teenagers of gypsy origin. For more then a decade there is an SCI camp organized in the children's home every summer, which is traditionally preceded by great enthusiasm and high expectations. For the inhabitants the camp is a unique opportunity to get in contact with people from abroad. Since the volunteers will be spending the most of the time with these children, motivation and interest in working with disadvantaged youngsters is expected from them. The other important purpose of the camp is to show the youngsters an example of disciplined and labour-of-love inspired work. This year the volunteers will be also going to Tiszalök, a village nearby, where they will be working in the garden of the home of mentally disabled kids. Due to the long tradition of the camp, the international volunteers are always warmly welcome, the leisure activities are well organized and diverse.

Type of Work:

One part will be physical work (4 hours per day from Monday till Friday) at elderly people's houses (painting, repairing fences, gardening, firewood cutting). The other part will be just as significant as the first one. In the first week, we can order and clean the area which not far from the settlement. This area was received a donation and there is a ruined house and lots of weeds.

This area is the first step, we want to clean, which is several years working for the future would develop an alternative energy-using sites operated camp. Where the Foundation and other programs outside the camp, organizing, and other organizations may also provide opportunities, programs and meetings. This is a long-term goal, we hope, will be implemented in the energy, with some help. The job is getting done by car. It will require creativity and enthusiasm too: for 2 hours in the afternoons we will help in a children summer camp, which is organized for local primary school kids without disabilities. We will organize various activities for them. It is important that the volunteers should be flexible, open-minded and creative people. We expect you to contribute with your own ideas!

Accommodation: Accommodation: The volunteers will stay in the social centre of Ágasegyháza. There are toilets, bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and washing machine. Beds are provided, but yoare suggested to bring a sleeping bag. Food is included for the duration of the workcamp. Lunches will be prepared by local families, ingredients for breakfast and dinner will be provided as well. It would be great if you could bring recipes with you so during these 2 weeks we could taste several national meals.

There is no preliminary condition for the selection of volunteers. The selection ignores the religious affiliation, nationality, sex, age and sexual orientation. We try to find enthusiastic, helpful, open-minded youth whose are committed next to the sustainability. It’s a great advantage, if someone knows the scout method, but no problem if not; we’ll share with you!
