Beer Barrel Polka (Here comes the Navy)

Beer Barrel Polka (Here comes the Navy)

The Andrews Sisters

Beer Barrel Polka, also known as Roll Out the Barrel, is a song which became popular worldwide during World War II. The music was composed by the Czech musician Jaromír Vejvoda in 1927. At that time, it was played without lyrics as Modřanská polka. Its first text was written later, in 1934.

The polka became famous around the world. In June 1939, "Beer Barrel Polka", as recorded by Will Glahé, was #1 on the Hit Parade. The authors of the English lyrics were Lew Brown and Wladimir Timm. The song was recorded and played by many others such as Andrews Sisters in 1939, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday.

During World War II, versions in many other languages (such as Norwegian, Swedish, German, Italian, French, and even Chinese) were created and the song was popular among soldiers.

In the navy,
In the navy
Every navy man’s the right guy.
Everyone gives him the bright eye,
And the navy they do right by

To a sailor.
To a sailor
All the world is just his main street.
When you're in the navy
You're in the worlds best gleam.

First you take your training as a boot,
Swing a hammock, navigate and shoot.
Jump open ships and subs and planes,
The seven seas are open lane.

When the bow is down with Davy Jones,
Folks will welcome home their rolling stones.
For every navy man’s a king
And you'll hear everybody sing:

Here comes the navy,
Break out the red, white and blue.
Here comes the navy
Fighting and sea going through.
Make way for navy.
Navy with anchors aweigh.
Everybody loves the navy of the USA.

First you take your training as a boot
Swing a hammock and navigate and shoot
Jump open ships and in subs and in planes
The seven seas are open lane

Here it comes, here it comes, here comes the navy.
Sing a song of good cheer because the navy is here.
Everybody loves the navy of the USA.
