For example:
I read on a blog that the new James Bond movie is really great.
I just started blogging on Englishclub.com and heaps of people are already reading it.
Origin: short for "web log"
3. egosurf
Meaning: to search for one's own name on the Internet
For example:
When Trevor tried egosurfing, he was surprised to find seven websites that mentioned his name.
Wheh he egosurfed, John Smith found his name in over two hundred million websites. He admitted that they probably weren't all about him, though.
4. flame
Meaning: to attack someone by posting an abusive message in an online forum or message board
For example:
I didn't post any more messages in the forum after people started flaming each other.
My daughter was very upset after someone flamed her on a music message board. They called her a mindless idiot for liking disco music.
5. geek
Meaning: a computer and IT expert
For example:
Google has some of the smartest geeks in the business working for them.
A lot of those computer geeks we saw in college in the 70's and 80's are incredibly wealthy now.
6. glitch
Meaning: a fault or defect, esp. in computer software
For example:
Why does this company's software have so many glitches? Can't they test it properly before releasing it?
I spent most of the morning trying to fix a glitch I found in our new software.
7. meatspace
Meaning: a term used by young internet users to mean the physical world, in contrast to the virtual world of "cyberspace"
For example:
Many computer geeks are more comfortable in cyberspace than in the real world of meatspace.
A: "Do you wanna get together tomorrow?" B: "You mean online or in meatspace?"
Origin: The word "meatspace" originated in cyberpunk fiction and culture, in order to make a clear distinction between the online world of cyberspace and the real world of flesh and blood people.
8. troll
Meaning: someone who posts provocative messages on forums or message boards (n.) | to post provocative messages on forums or message boards (v.)
For example:
We need someone to moderate the forum and delete messages from spammers, trolls and other online pests.
John says he doesn't understand why people go around trolling message boards and deliberately starting flame wars.
Origin: In its original meaning, a troll is a very ugly mythical creature that lives in caves and under bridges. The term was probably borrowed for the slang meaning given here because those who disrupt message boards are often loathed in cyberspace in the same way traditional trolls are loathed in myths and fairy tales.
9. up time
Meaning: time a computer system is operating
For example:
Before choosing a host for your website, check the average up time for their servers.
They claim to have an up time of 99.99 per cent, but I doubt that somehow.
10. virus
Meaning: a harmful computer program that can spread from one machine to another
For example:
Most viruses are spread when sent as email attachments, and they're activated when the recipient clicks on the program's icon.
If you want to avoid the hassle of dealing with computer viruses, get a Mac computer. Very few viruses target Macs.
Origin: These programs are called viruses because they act in ways very similar to biological viruses, in that they damage the host and they can spread from host to host.
