PRESENT SIMPLE (DO – DOES in questions and negatives sentences)

Tell me about your daily routines

What time do you usually get up?

What do you usually have for breakfast?

When do you usually start school / work?

How do you usually go to school / work?

How often does your best friend call you?

Does it often rain in winter in your country?

PRESENT CONTINUOUS (BE + V-ING)

Tell me about the situation you are in at the moment

What are you wearing today?

What do you think people in your family are doing at this time of day?

What’s happening around you now?

What’s the weather like today?

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE (HAVE / HAS + V-en)

Talk about your experience

Have you ever ridden a horse or a camel?

What is the best book you have ever read?

Have you had breakfast yet today?

How many times have you changed your address so far?

Has the clock struck 10 yet?

Has it ever snowed in May where you live?

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS (HAVE BEEN + V-en)

Talk about an activity that has a link to the present and may continue in the future

How long have you been learning English?

Have you been getting enough exercise these days?

What has been happening in the news lately?

Has the population of your country been growing or getting smaller?

Have oil prices been increasing lately?

Have you been living here for more than 3 years?

What have you just been doing?

 

PAST SIMPLE (DID in questions and negatives sentences – adds ‘–ed’ to regular verbs)

Talk about the past – tell a story

When were you born? When were your parents born?

What did you do yesterday?

When was the last time you played with friends?

When was the first time you flew in a plane? How did you feel then?

Where did you go for your last holiday? Did you enjoy it? What was the weather like?

PAST CONTINOUS (WAS – WERE + V-ING)

Talk about an activity in the past – talk about the background of a story

What were you thinking of an hour ago?

Was the sun shining when you got up this morning? If not, what was the weather like?

Where did you go yesterday? What were people doing there when you arrived?

PAST PERFECT SIMPLE (HAD + V-en)

Talk about an event that happened before another in the past

Had anybody cooked dinner for you when you arrived home last night?

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS (HAD + BEEN + V-ING)

Talk about an activity that happened before an event in the past

Had it been raining during the night when you woke up this morning? How do you know?

 

FUTURE SIMPLE (WILL + BASE INFINITIVE)

Predict a future event

How will you use English in the future?

What will your life be like in 10 years’ time?

Will you ever go to America?

Will the world be better in 50 years’ time? Why do you think so?

FUTURE CONTINUOUS (WILL + BE + V-ING)

Talk about fixed appointments or future activities

What will you be doing tomorrow at this time of day?

What will you be doing at midnight?

FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE (WILL + HAVE + V-en)

Talk about completed actions in the future

What will you have achieved before the time you retire?

What will you have done before 12 tomorrow morning?

How many hours will you have worked at the end of this week?

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS (WILL + HAVE + BEEN + V-ing)

Rarely used in conversation – adds the notion of activity to the previous tense

What will you have been doing before you go to bed tomorrow?
