Text ЗА Choosing an Occupation

I want to be a civil engineer. Builders construct and reconstruct residential and industrial buildings, bridges, schools, palaces of culture, museums, theatres, kinder gardens and hospitals. They build tunnels, canals, power stations, dams and reservoirs.

An architect has to think not only of what he wants the building to lode like when it is finished, but also what it is to be used for. The structure an architect creates should give us pleasure and a sense of beauty. He is engaged to prepare the plans and specifications and usually to supervise the construction of the project

I'll try to study to the best of my abilities to achieve my life's ambition and to justify the hopes of my parents. I also hope that Г11 never regret my choice and get a well-paid and interesting job afterwards.

Text 1A Higher Education in Britain

There is a considerable choice of post-school education in Britain. In addition to universities, there are also polytechnics and a series of different types of assisted colleges. Universities in Britain enjoy complete academic freedom, choosing their own staff and deciding which students to admit, what and how to teach, and which degrees to award (first degrees are called Bachelor degrees). They are mainly government-funded, except for the totally independent University of Buckingham.

Virtually all degree courses are full-time and most last three years {medical and veterinary courses last five or six years).

Students who obtain their Bachelor degree (graduates) can apply to take a further degree course, usually involving a mixture of exam courses and research. There are two different types of post-graduate courses — the Master’s degree (MA or MSc) and higher degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Every student can choose which lectures he will attend during the term, though his own college tutor will advise him which lectures seem likely to be more useful. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory. Apart from lectures, teaching is by means of the "tutorial" system, which is a system of individual tuition organized by the colleges. A student does not necessarily go only to his own tutor but may be assigned to another don in his college or in another college.

They like their work very much. They have been married for twenty-five years. They have much in common, but their views on music, films, books and sports are rather different. My father is fond of tennis and my mother doesn't go in for sports.

Text 1A Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was bom at Ulm, Germany, on March 14, 1879. Six weeks later die family moved to Munich.

In 1896, he entered the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich to be trained as a teacher of physics and mathematics.

In 1901 he gained his diploma. He acquired Swiss citizenship and, as he was unable to find a teaching post, he accepted a position as technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. In 1905, he obtained his doctor's degree. 1911 was a very significant year for Einstein since he was able to make preliminary predictions about how a ray of light from a distant star, passing near the Sun, would appear to be bent lightly, in the direction of the Sun.

He became a German citizen in 1914 and remained in Berlin until 1932.1n 1915 Einstein published the definitive version of general theory of relativity.

Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921, but not for relativity rather for his 1905 work on the photoelectric effect.

A third visit to the United States in 1932 was followed by the offer of a post of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. Einstein accepted an offer and left Germany in December 1932 for the United States. The following month die Nazis came to power in Germany and Einstein was never to return there. He became a United States citizen in 1940. and retired from his post in 1945.

One week before his death Einstein signed his last letter. It was a letter in which he agreed that his name should go on a manifesto urging all nations to give up nuclear weapons.

Albert Einstein died on April 18, 1955, at Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
