MASTER’S STANDING ORDERS

SO/MA/08/08

RE:OOW

SUBJECT: RELIEF OF THE WATCH

 

Ref: STCW 95 Section A - VIII/2:18

 

* The incoming watch officer must satisfy himself that the members of his watch team are fully capable of performing their duties, particularly with regard to their adjustment to night vision, prior to accepting responsibility for the watch.

* The incoming officer shall not take over the watch until such time that his sight has adjusted to the light conditions, further, he must be satisfied as to the:

* standing orders and any special instructions issued by the Master concerning the navigation of the ship; set and leeway allowed.

* position, course, speed and draught of the ship;

* prevailing / predicted tides, current, weather, visibility and the effect of these factors upon the course and speed of the ship;

* The OOW should not hand over the watch if there is any reason to beleve that the relieving officer is unfit or temporarily unable to carry out his duties effectively.

* Before taking over the watch,the relieving officer must be satified that the ship's position is correct and that the intended track,course and speed are appropriate.

* The OOW is to supply information to the relieving watch about important developments during the watch such as the proximity to navigational dangers, the traffic situation, course changes, weather information, navigational warnings and the master's special orders.

* The relieving watch must arrive on bridge in time so as their eyes have time to adjust to night vision before they assume responsibility for the watch.

* The handling over of the responsibility for the watch should be done at a time when the vessel is not involved in manoeuvering or taking action to avoid a hazard.
