There are a lot of types of housing. Everyone can find something he or she likes. For instance, some people prefer to live somewhere in the country in a small, but cosy cottage or a large farmhouse.

There are also people who like semi-detached houses. I believe that such houses attract people because they are less expensive than mansions or bungalows for example and you have only one neighbour as opposed to block of flats. And as you have a neighbour you can always turn to him if you need something, though from time to time your neighbour can disturb you when he repairs his part of the house or listens to music too loudly. But in general I'm sure that it's quite nice to live in a semi-detached house.

Next type of housing is a block of flats. I consider that it's the cheapest type of dwelling in a town. Flats can be of different sizes: one-room, two-room, three-room. Besides among advantages of living in a block o f flats is the fact that it takes less time to tidy up a flat than a house. But the disadvantages: your neighbours can make a lot of noise when they, for example, hammer or drill the wall, or when they organize a party. Sometimes you can depend on your neighbours - imagine such a situation: your neighbours' tap is dripping (кран течет) and they need it to be repaired, so they block the water supply not only in their own flat but also in yours and you have to wait for hours till you can do the washing-up or take a shower. It isn't convenient, but in spite of it the largest part of population in our country lives in blocks of flats. I also live in a flat and I can say that all these disadvantages don't bother me very much, and in general it's a good type of housing.

And the last type of dwelling I want to mention is a detached house. It has a lot of advantages: first of all your neighbours can never disturb you. But at the same time if you want to ask your neighbours for something or just to have a talk you can visit them. As you have some land around the house you can build outhouses (надворное строение).

Nowadays a lot of people live in big cities because it is very comfortable, as you can find everything you need in everyday life very quickly. But too many people cannot live there because there is little space for everybody. People have to live in high buildings in modern flats. In Minsk we can see 12- storied buildings with one, two and tree- room flats. There are modern facilities such as telephone, central heating, running water, electricity and gas. You can use such electricity devices as: TV sets, hi-fi systems, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, microwave ovens, electric irons and many others. They help in our daily life.There are people who don't like to live in cities they prefer to be alone in a small country house near a river or a lake. They like to walk in the morning in the forest and breath fresh air, and enjoy silence. Besides in villages there aren't any conveniences at all. Also there isn't central heating and in winters people have to burn oven as in the last century. In the day time you can walk in the garden, but in the evening everything you can do is to read a books by a candle. To living in such conditions is very hard for a city dweller. Nowadays a lot of people try to build big houses near cities and spend their week-ends there. The main reason why people leave cities are bad ecological conditions. Noise, polluted air and water make health of the man weak. After hard working day people come home and want to rest but nose from heavy traffic in streets will not allow to do that. As for me I prefer to live in the city, because I feel uncomfortable coz I can’t live without telephone, electricity and other facilities. People invented one more way to communicate with other people it is internet. Without the telephone and electricity I cannot use it. I like city but sometimes it is pleasant to stay in the country for a while. The citizens are more private (закрыты от всех) people than the villager. Often people, who live in the city, know their neighbours just by sight.

To my mind those people, who prefer the country really adore nature: they want to wake up to songs of birds, to enjoy beautiful landscapes, to breath fresh air or in other words they want to have a calm and measured rhythm of life. Usually such people keep the poultry and the cattle. One of advantages living in such a house is that you have your own land where you can grow fruit and vegetables, make flowerbeds and plant beautiful flowers, lay out an orchard, etc. You can also build some outhouses like a green-house, a garage, a tool shed or an arbour (беседка). But the greatest disadvantage of living in a farmhouse or in a cottage, in my opinion, is that it takes much time to get to the nearest town, but if you have a car it isn't a problem for you. That's why I think over the possibility to live in a cottage when I retire. Also people who live in a country house are healthier than people who live in a modern flat. They live in fresh air and eat fresh food. That why they are strong and live longer than people who live in a modern flat. Of course living in a modern flat more comfortable but and more expensive. So i think it is difficult to talk about it coz tastes differ. Modern private houses (cottages) are equipped by all necessary for convenience of life of people. There is an Internet connection, a cable television with many channels. Water supply, heating is provided. Secondly, the house is your own property where there are neighbors neither from above, nor from below, and to fill in you from above with boiled water there will be simply nobody. Besides, in the private house you have the right to do everything, everything and when want. U can mend or repair smth early in the morning or include music late at night – and there will be no dissatisfied with neighbors. In the private house it is possible to organize the economy – birds, hens, geese. It is possible to fry kebab, to play the most various games which in the conditions of the apartment in any way you will not carry out. Private houses cost cheaper than a flat. Families even with the average budget can get the personal house. There are no exhaust gases. U can enjoy fresh air. During free time from work it is possible to descend in the wood, on the small river. To reach for work from the settlement – it is a pleasure. On streets there are no jams, and very often driving to the city center on the route takes only some minutes. U can grow up a crop, however, but it demands a lot of time. Here it can realize the dreams and it is simple to keep health. To live in cottages today it is very prestigious. There is a set of various shops where you can buy the necessary goods, without leaving 4 the city.

I like the English proverb: "My home is my castle" because my flat is, indeed, my castle. We live in a 5- storeyed block of flats in the town of Smorgon. We live on the third floor in a three-room flat.It has all modern conveniences: central heating, gas, electricity, cold and hot water, a lift and a chute to carry rubbish down. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, a lavatory (a toilet) and a balcony and a hall in our flat. The living-room is the largest and most comfortable & beautiful room in the flat. To the right there is a wall-unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a wardrobe and some shelves. There is a big TV set here. We like to spend time watching TV and listening to music & singing karaoke here. There is a big leather sofa and 2 comfortable arm chairs with a small but very nice table here. We have a wide warm fluffy carpet on the floor. Besides, there is a little tea table and a stand lamp are in the left-hand corner. here. There are orange curtains on the large window. My mother likes flowers very much, that’s why there are a lot of them on the window-cell. There are a lot of different plates, photos and other souvenirs which we’ve brought from foreign countries. There is a piano and stool before it.

The kitchen is light, cozy and has all modern equipment such as huge fridge, microwave, modern oven, dishwasher and some other things. There are lovely curtains on the window and many flowerpots on the window-sill. There is a table, four chairs.

The bathroom is spacious with bathroom-tub in the center and fluffy rug near it. The room is warm and relaxed. There are many scented candles everywhere. There hangs a big mirror.

My room is my haven

I would like to tell you a few words about my room. We live in three-room flat. I have my own room. It is quite spacious and made in a modern style. My safe haven, a place I can completely be myself in & relax, escape the outside world and concentrate on other important things in my life... The atmosphere is pretty relaxing; because these are calming green tones. I think that it is furnished tastefully. In my opinion, my place is very nice and it’s really cozy & comfortable to live there. When my friends come to visit me, I invite them into my room.

There is a built-in wardrobe with coat-hangers to hang clothes on & with a mirror and a sofa that can be simply made into a bed, where I sleep. My workplace is my comfortable whirling arm-chair and a desk with a table lamp. There is essential part of a student’s life – a personal computer,a printer and a scanner.

placed on this desk. There are shelves above the desk. I keep my books, text-books, note-books, CD’s, DVD’s there. I like music very much, so I have a powerful stereo system along with a TV-set in my room. There is a pink bedspread over my sofa. My bed sheets are zebra print.

The desk has a lot of drawers where I keep my text-books, notes, pens, pencils and other necessary things. There is a lamp with blue shade. I like to turn on the lamp, sit in the arm-chair and read an interesting book. On the little table there is a stereo cassette recorder. My room is cluttered with treasured to my heart souvenires.

There are some shelves with books in my room. You can see Russian and English books there. There is a big thick carpet on the floor. There are some posters with my favourite singers on the wall. The furniture is built-in. So it doesn’t take much space. There is an alarm clock & a phone on the table.

There is a small window in my room but it faces the park, so the view is really wonderful!

The walls of my room are papered in a white colour OR (My room is painted all pink) and the white and green curtains on the window. Besides, there are a lot of flowers in my room. I love taking care of the flowers and water them regularly.

In the right corner there is a comfortable arm-chair. There is a standard lamp near it. There is a three-leaved mirror (a dresser) & chest of drawers- комод in my room.

There is a black plasma television resided on the wall which I enjoy watching my favorite movies. There is a DVD-player. Then I have a walk-in closet where I have lots of shoes, clothes, school supplies, and personal belongings. I adore my flay a lot.
