It is a true pleasure for me to write this letter of recommendation for Katsiaryna Shkraba, who was my student at the Faculty of Philology, Department of Eastern (Chinese) Philology in 2011-2014. Katsiaryna is, without question, one of the most outstanding students I have taught at Belarusian State University in the last five semesters of teaching. She shows great interest in the Chinese language and culture.

Being still a first-year student, she passed the HSK exam (2^nd level), while studying in her second year, she got two more HSK certificates (3^rd and 4^th levels) and an HSKK (1^st level). In November 2013 she took part in the National public speaking contest, where she presented her essay “My Chinese dream”. She really dreams about studying in China and does her best to realize this ambition.

Katsiaryna is a careful and creative thinker with an eye for details and a devotion to logic, which serves her well both in the sciences and outside them. Her regular contributions to full-class discussions provided insight both for her peers and for me as an instructor.

Katsiaryna was also invaluable in small-group interaction with her peers. Without my asking, she took on the responsibility of helping her classmates. The student has a profound knowledge of the English language. She was granted a Diploma of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus for winning the National contest in the English language in 2011 and was thrice a laureate of the award of the President of the Republic of Belarus in support of gifted students for winning the National contest in the English language in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Excellent knowledge of the English language helps her much in learning the Chinese language, which she intends to learn even better than English.

In addition, Katsiaryna was very generous with her time and energies, helping first year students learn English and Russian.

Katsiaryna breaks the "scientist" stereotype with her writing: she was the best writer in the sections I taught that semester. And what was perhaps even more impressive was that she took the task of improving her writing as or more seriously than any other student in the class.

Katsiaryna is not only an excellent student, but she is also personally delightful. She is as comfortable with herself as she is engaging, pleasant, and humorous. As I got to know Katsiaryna, I became only more impressed by the wide range of her abilities - and by her modesty about them. She is an accomplished photographer and artist, both of which she does with a passion rare among students.

I wholeheartedly recommend Katsiaryna as a prospective student. In fact, I can think of few students whom I would recommend as highly. I can also envision Katsiaryna as a highly competent translator or journalist someday, which I say as a high compliment indeed. Please contact me if there is anything else I can do on her behalf.
