Read the preface and the introduction at p.89 .

The Bath

Read the preface and the introduction at p.89.

See if you can prove that the author was a distinguished writer.

What magazines benefited from cooperating with R. Carver?

A very personal question: How often are you in a state of uncertainty, indecision?

1. Read the story to the end at p. 99 for general understanding, first without bothering much about looking up new words in the dictionary, and see if you can answer the questions that follow.

1.1 Count your reading speed. Put it down: My time is …... minutes/hours

1.2 Tick the questions you could answer.

How did the mother get to the baker's shop?

Why was the baker expected to say a lot of pleasantries?

Was it the birthday cake that caused the accident?

Did the boy lose his conscience after he had been knocked down by a car?

Which of the parents turned out to be more patient waiting for the boy to wake up?

What did one of the doctors do every time he came into the room?

What was the purpose of the technician’s visiting the boy?

Did the baker sue his customer?

2. Now read the story again, use your dictionary when you have to do so and add new words and phrases to the table below. Rearrange the English equivalents which are in the second column so that they would be directly apposite their synonyms, add equivalents of your own.

Underline the words and phrases that you have added to the table and will want to use in class to your benefit.

3. Read the following list of phrases. Which of the following phrases are actual synonyms? Find the phrase that does not belong here. Comment on the stylistic colouring of these set-phrases.

to be/get hurt in a car accident, to be run over by a car, to be reduced to pebble, to be hit by a car, to be knocked down by a car.

4. Have a look at the sentence from the story “He pulled into the driveway”. What exactly was there to be pulled into the driveway? What in fact happened? Reword the sentence so that it could be easier to understand its essence.

5. Write an outline on the story in the form of wh-questions. The questions have to cover the whole plot line of the story.

6. Write a letter as though you are one of the actual participants of the events. The letter has to be addressed to a particular person. Identify this person.

Be prepared to retell the contents of the letter.

7. From the section Discussion, that follows the story, choose one of the points, do the task. Prepare to present it to your colleagues.

8. In the section Language Focus find point 2. See if you could orally answer the questions.

Also read point 3.

9. Final question: What’s the idea about going home and having a bath? Didn’t it seem to you that the mother and the father were obsessed with the idea of cleanliness?

Be prepared to get an additional task on the stylistics of the story, it will come later.

Count the time you have spent on doing all the tasks. Put it down: My time is …... minutes/hours

And now Grammar.
