Hobbies, Free Time
6(2)
1. Let`s talk about your hobbies. What do you do in your free time?
All people are different and so they prefer spending their free time in different ways. Many people get full value from leisure by enjoying nature, listening to music, reading books, travelling, painting or collecting stamps, coins, books, records or postcards. As for me, I prefer to spend my free time in different ways. I like to go in for sports, to dance, to swim, to play football, basketball, volleyball or tennis with my friends. I like to watch TV, to listen to music, play computer games and read books. I am also keen on going for a walk and enjoying the beauty of nature. Also I get into music and I am very good at playing the violin (the piano, the guitar, the trumpet…).
2. Is cinema still important? Why (not)?
In my opinion, cinema is still important today. It is one of the most important and effective forms of art nowadays. It does not only entertain us, educates us and moves our feelings. Cinema is international. It unites people of different nationalities and religions. To tell the truth, I am a cinemagoer. To me, going to the cinema is the best relaxation and it is a nice way to spend my free time.
3. What questions can you ask a British friend about his/her hobbies?
1. What do you like doing in your free time?
2. What are your hobbies?
3. Are you a cinemagoer (a theatergoer)?
4. Are you fond of reading books?
5. What do you do on holidays?
4. Can you recommend me to watch one of the films you have seen recently?
I would recommend everyone to watch a nice romantic comedy «Marley and Me». It is a two-hour film directed by David Frankel with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as the leading actors. It is a screen version of the book written by John Grogan. I think that this film is very amusing, touching and it is worth seeing. I enjoy not only the film, but the scenery, costumes, music and the actors` playing.
5. Many parents complain that children do not read books. Why do you think children are not interested in reading?
Unfortunately, children read so little today. There are a lot of reasons. Some say television is to blame as it offers attractive programmes which do not require the effort of reading. For others it is the fault of schools which do not teach children to appreciate literature and its wonders. In my opinion, it is easier for children to use computers or consult video encyclopedias than to appreciate the fascination of reading.
