‘A Presentation about Myself’ is often considered to be one of the inconvenient, unpleasant, and even tedious speech topics.

Talking about yourself – it is not easy to understand clearly what exactly your audience wants to know, and how much you should tell them. You are at a loose end. You ask yourself a question: “Goodness knows! Are they sitting and thinking at the moment: “Oh! What a bore he (she) is!”

Unfortunately, this also happens to be one of the most common speeches you will be asked to give. Whether you are applying for a new job, or starting a new course/class, quite often, the first meeting will involve getting to know each other and this will often mean saying a little bit about you. Luckily, this often has a short time scale, perhaps five or ten minutes, so it is not as daunting as it sounds.

A presentation is a formal talk to one or more people that “presents” ideas or information in a clear, structured way. Some people are sometimes afraid of speaking in public, but if you follow a few simple rules, giving a presentation is actually very easy.

Firstly, when planning your speech, break it down into three sections: a beginning, a middle, and a conclusion. This will give your speech a necessary structure.

IN THE BEGINNING – the most important thing to remember that it does not really contain any real information. Smile, greet your audience with a warm welcome, tell them who you are and what you are going to talk about, and tell them why you are going to talk about it. “From the very start I should say that it is uneasy thing to speak about myself as it is hard to have an objective look at yourself from aside, but at the same time who knows you better than you yourself do? So, I’ll try to do it...”

THE BIT IN THE MIDDLE – this is where you tell them about you, tell them about your traits of character, hobbies, your research interests, your hopes, your dreams, your goals. Do not brag about what you have achieved but be informative about it. If it is relevant then you should definitely include achievements.

If you are at a job interview discuss the reasons for wanting the job, touch on some past experience and tell them why you think you are suitable. Back this up with an anecdote from your past if it is related. Tell them what you pride yourself on. This might be time keeping, efficiency, people skills, or all of these. Be prepared for questions on this because they may ask for examples of when you have shown these skills.

If you starting a new college course then tell them why you have chosen to go to this magistracy, who is your scientific advisor, what do you have for an object, what interests you about that particular job or career, what experience you have had previously, and where you hope it will take you?

Do not compare yourself with anyone else. Remember, no two people in this world are alike. You have grown with a different experience and talent than the rest and you should be proud of your individuality. Make a list of the things you like (Let your inner light shine!) and you do not like about yourself. Do not mind what others say. Get this fact right – people insult others only to hide their own insecurities.

WRAPPING IT UP – the most important point to remember here is never to add any extra information at this point, this is where you should ask the audience if they have any questions. Do a little preparation for this beforehand so that you are prepared for questions about something that you have not covered.

Have a sense of humour. Do not take things so seriously. Be able to laugh at life and at yourself.

Do not pay attention to gossip: If there is someone who is gossiping about you try to ignore it. Why should their opinion of you matter? Do they even know you well? People who gossip do not deserve your time in getting all upset about them.

Finally, you should thank them for their time and attention. And that’s it, finished!

1. What do you qualify yourself as?

2. Do you consider yourself to be popular?

3. Is there anybody whom you like more than yourself?

4. How open-minded are you?

5. What is your usual emotion?

6. What do you find yourself saying a lot?

7. Were you a class clown at school or at Uni?

8. Are you serious about your relationship?

9. What influences your mood?

1. Read the extract of self-presentation. How do you like it?

...I have never thought I’m a beauty. I wish I were more beautiful, of course. Nevertheless, my appearance doesn’t spoil my character.

You know, we attract people by the qualities we display. We keep them by the qualities we possess. I think that I am lucky to have some qualities that are a magnet for several people. First of all, these are honesty, kindness, sincerity, devotedness. People think that I’m well-bred and respectful, optimistic and independent in thought and behaviour.

I suppose that I am a rather reserved, calm and modest person. But at times I can lose my tempo and become either angry or gloomy. I like staying alone and sometimes I retire into my shell. But at the same time I like my friends, I like to laugh and joke. I have got a sense of humour. It means I understand humour and appreciate it. I know my strength and weaknesses. I am able to stand up for myself.

There are many things in our life I like and some I dislike. I like when everything is OK. Being happy is one way of being wise. I like to study because knowledge is useful. I am fond of reading as it gives not only knowledge, but wonderful moments of joy and pleasure. I like to spend time with my parents, as we are a friendly family. I like countryside and fresh air. I like to walk in the woods communicating and taking pictures of the nature. I’m very fond of walking barefoot on the grass in the rain. I like Christmas, discos, new impressions, travelling and what not! Variety is the spice of life, isn’t it?

I am sociable, so I have got a lot of friends. As for me, I appreciate people’s honesty, sense of justice and intelligence. I don’t like when people are rude and aggressive.

I am stubborn at times. But to my mind being persistent is not always a bad thing. It helps me never leave things half done. At times, I feel dissatisfied with myself, especially when I fail to do something or cannot do things the way they should be done. At the same time, I think I am hard working and diligent.

Now a few words about my inclinations. I don’t have any special hobby, like collecting something, but I’m fond of reading books. They give me more knowledge of their people’s lives and feelings and broaden my outlook. In my opinion, books are a source of emotional inspiration and romantic feeling. Besides, books help me to continue my own education. The time spend on a good book is never wasted.

Of course I like music! It gives me much delight and pleasure. Besides, I am a great theatregoer. Whenever I have some time to spare, I go to the theatre. I am not keen on television. Sometimes I play different sport games for health and pleasure. I usually play such games as volleyball and basketball.

And the last thing I would like to tell you about things I hope to achieve in my life are: to have a very successful career, to have the home of my dreams and to find someone in my life to share all that with. I want to put my plans into practice. I know that the road ahead will not be easy for me, but I cannot stop here. I need to move on in order to reach my goals. My success in the future lies in my own hands. Day by day, step for step, I’m achieving the goals I’m working towards.
