Exercise 1. Study the meanings of the phrasal verb “to get. ”

1. Get away means to escape from or place

The three men got away in a stolen car.

 

2. Get along / on.

If two or more people get along / on, they have a friendly relationship, they like each other and are friendly to each other.

We've always got along quite well. Robert and his sister don’t really get along.

 

3. Get on means to get into a bus, a train, a plane.

The bus driver waited until we got on.

The boy got on his bike and rode away.

 

4. Get off

a. have a holiday; Do you get much time off

at Christmas?

b. leave a bus, a train, a plane; I asked the bus driver where to get off.

 

5. Get up

a. to get out of bed after sleeping or to wake somebody up and make them get out of bed.

He never gets up before five.

 

6. Get over

Start to fell happy or well again after something bad has happened to you.

It can take weeks to get over an illness like that.

 

7. Get down to work / business

Start doing something that you need to do without wasting any more time.

I’d like to get down to business right now.

 

 

8. Get out

Leave a pace, a building, a car.

The place was on fire – we got out just in time.
