٭FACT FILE:

Football boots come in four main types:

1.Moulded. The sole and studs on moulded boots are made from one piece of rubber. The suds are usually fairly short and closely spaced. Moulded boots are best for hard pitches, although those with longer studs are fine on softer ground too.

2.Screw-in studs. Traditionally, screw-in boots have just six studs, with each stud screwing directly into the sole of the boot. The great advantage of this system is that studs can be changed to suit the conditions (i.e. long, metal studs for soft pitches and short, rubber studs for firm ground).

3.Astro-turf. The arrival of the first astro-turf pitches in the 1970s saw the invention of a special type of boot, specially for this surface. Astro pitches are no longer used at the top level of the game, but the boots are still made to meet the demands of amateur footballers and juniors.

4.Cleats/blades. A recent innovation of the part of sportswear firms is the cleat-sole boot. These boots are based on designs used in American sports (most notably baseball). They have one-piece sole unit that is made up of a series of blades or cleats.
