A. Vocabulary work:

I. Transcribe and practice reading the following words:

account scholarship scandalous

parlor gnawing alumna

indulge excellency companionable

proficiency soak eccentric

allowance board tuition

 

II. Prepare model reading of the letter written on Thursday (p.136).

III. Give the English for:

Баловать, попасть под дождь, расстроенный, вращаться в одних социальных кругах, пресная еда, не иметь ни малейшего представления, набросок.

 

IV. Translate the following words and phrases and use them in situations:

to indulge sb

at first glance/ at first sight

at least/ in the least

to give details

to warn sb

to get accustomed to

can’t help doing sth

to interfere in/ with

scholarship

to apply for

to be a burden to sb

 

V. Find words or phrases in the chapter which mean much the same as the following:

For some time, very soon, to get used to.

VI. Comment on the grammar phenomenon used in the following sentence:“I wish you were here, too; we’d all have such a jolly time together.”

B. Comprehension tasks:

I. Translate into Russian:

1. … he’s been here ten days and he doesn’t show any signs of going.

2. The way Mrs.Semples pampers that man is scandalous.

3. He is an awfully companionable sort of man, though you would never believe it to see him casually; he looks at first glance like a true Pendleton, but he isn’t in the least. He is just as simple and unaffected and sweet as he can be…

4. Our clothes were drenched before we reached home – but our spirits not even damp.

5. He has gone and we are missing him! When you get accustomed to people or places or ways of living, and then have them suddenly snatched away, it does leave, an awfully empty, gnawing sort of sensation.

II. Answer the questions:

1. How did Mr.Pendleton’s arrival change Jerusha’s life on the farm?

2. What books was Jerusha reading that summer? What impression did they produce on her?

3. How did Jerusha’s literary career form that summer? Do you think Mr.Pendleton’s judgement was objective when he said her stories were dreadful?

4. What news did Jerusha get? Why was she so glad to win a scholarship?

C.

I. Correct the sentences if you feel that the idea is wrong:

1. It is very eccentric that I don’t know your name.

2. Those stories and poems I sent to the magazines all came back without much delay. I felt really disappointed.

3. Master Jervie asked me to let him read my stories and I just couldn’t refuse him.

4. He said very politely that he didn’t like my stories very much.

5. I applied for it before I left, and I hoped I’d get it in spite of my Freshman bad work in mathematics and Latin.

 

II. Give the phrases and sentences which indicate the following:

1. Judy enjoyed Mr.Pendleton’s company.

2. Jerusha was working to be a real author.

 

III. Write a two-page long summary of the chapter making use of the vocabulary units from the list.
