The Problem of Poverty in Our Country

1. The problem of poverty is one of the burning problems of our society which is in fact divided into the rich and the poor. The number of people whose standard of living is low is increasing. They cannot afford buying necessary things for life and have a low income. Among those people are the unemployed, the low paid groups of workers, the elderly with small occupation pensions, the sick and disabled whose social pensions leave much to be desired, one-parent families and those with many children.

2. What are the causes of poverty?

· The unemployment which leads to hunger, stresses and crimes

· Low salaries which lead to debts in flat rents and lack of money, bad nutrition and health problems

· Lack of education which leads to low-paid jobs and physically demanding jobs

· Low income of families resulted in poor nutrition, diseases, poor housing and insanitary conditions

· Literacy

3. What are the possible solutions of the problem?

· Developing of the Welfare State (a system by which the government provides social security of the people in education, health service, pensions)

At the national level:

· Introducing of free medical service and national insurance

· Unemployment benefits

· Sickness benefits

· Retirement pensions

· Child benefits

· Supplementary benefits for single parents, families with low incomes

At the local level

· Introducing of local government benefits to compensate local income

· Housing benefits or subsidies

· Social services for the old and mentally physically handicapped

· Free supplementary education
