End-of-Semester Exam Requirements

At the exam the third-year students are to dwell on two theoretical issues (1.on morphology - 15 points, and 2.on syntax – 15 points) and analyse a compound-complex sentence - 10 points.

 

1.The students are to demonstrate the ability to understand and dwell on basic principles of the morphologic and syntactic organization of the English language, exemplify various syntactic structures and find adequate equivalents in the students’ native language on the given below examination topic areas.

Morphology

1.Classification of nouns. The use of articles with proper nouns.

2.The use of articles with common nouns modified by attributes.

3.The use of articles in some syntactic relations.

4.The use of the definite article.

5.The use of articles modified by certain adjectives, pronouns and numerals.

6.The use of articles with common nouns, nouns of material, abstract nouns.

7.Present Indefinite, Present Continuous, Present Perfect Continuous.

8.Present Perfect, Past Indefinite.

9.Past Continuous, Past Perfect, Past Perfect Continuous.

10.Future Indefinite, Future Perfect, Future Continuous, Future Perfect Continuous.

11.The Adjective. The Numeral.

12.The Pronoun. The classification of Pronouns.

13.The category of Voice. The use of the Passive Voice. The verb “to be+Participle II”.

14.The Infinitive, its forms and functions.

15.Infinitive constructions, their functions in the sentence.

16.The Gerund, its forms and functions. Gerundial constructions.

17.The Participle, its double nature and functions.

18.Participial constructions, their functions in the sentence.

19.The category of Mood. Indicative, Imperative and Oblique Moods.

20.The use of the Oblique Mood in complex sentences.

21.The use of the Unreal Moods in simple and complex sentences.

22.The use of the Problematic Moods in simple and complex sentences.

23.Modal verbs “may” and “can”.

24.Modal verbs “ought”, “shall”, “will”, “need”, “dare”, “should”.

25.Modal verbs “must” and its equivalents “to be+Infinitive”, “to have+Infinitive”

 

Syntax

3.”It” as the subject of the sentence.

6.The compound nominal predicate. Ways of expressing the predicative. Predicative subclauses.

9.Agreement of the predicate with the subject.

10.Word order. Inverted order of words.

11.The object, its kinds and ways of expression.

12.The attribute, ways of expression.

13.Attributive clauses, their kinds.

14.the adverbial modifier, its kinds.

15.The sequence of tenses.

16.The compound sentence. Types of coordination.

17.Detached parts of the sentence. The independent elements. Sentences with homogeneous parts.

18.Indirect speech. Indirect statements, questions, orders, offers, exclamations.

 

2.Practical assignment includes the analysis of a sentence according to the given below scheme

It is a compound complex sentence consisting of two coordinate (independent) clauses connected by the copulative conjunction and.

The first independent clause is a complex sentence consisting of the main clause (2) and the adverbial sub-clause of time (1) introduced by the conjunction when.

The second independent clause is a complex sentence too. It consists of the main clause (4) and two sub-clauses: an adverbial clause of time (3) introduced by the conjunction as soon as and an adverbial clause of comparison (5) introduced by the conjunction as though.



 

1. When we reached the landing. It is a simple, extended, two-member, declarative, affirmative sentence. We is the simple subject expressed by a personal pronoun of the 1st person plural in the Nominative Case. Reached is a simple verbal predicate expressed by the verb to reach in the Past Indefinite active. The landing is a direct object expressed by a noun in the Common Case.

2. All the old women turned their heads. It is a simple, extended, two-member, declarative, affirmative sentence. The women is the simple subject expressed by a noun in the Common Case, plural. All is an attribute to the subject. It is expressed by the defining pronoun. Turned is a simple verbal predicate in the Past Indefinite active. Heads is a direct object expressed by a class noun in the Common Case, plural. Their is an attribute expressed by a possessive pronoun in the conjoint form.

4. Their voices rise and fell. Voices is the simple subject expressed by a noun in the Common Case, plural. Their is an attribute expressed by a possessive pronoun in the conjoint form. Rose and fell are homogeneous simple verbal predicates in the Past Indefinite active.

5. As though they were singing together. They is the simple subject expressed by a personal pronoun of the 3rd person plural in the Nominative Case. Were singing is a simple verbal predicate in the Past Continuous active. Together is an adverbial modifier of manner expressed by an adverb.
