EDUCATION

What can you tell me about the system of education in Belarus? The system of education can be divided into some parts. Pre-school education is not compulsory in Belarus but around 70% of children do attend nursery or kindergarten before they start school. School is divided into primary school (grades 1 to 4), secondary school (grades from 5 to 9) and high school (grades 10 to 11). Most children in Belarus start school at the age of 6. They spend 4 years in primary school studying the basics of Mathematics, Russian and Belarusian Languages and a foreign language. Children are taught to make things by hand, draw and paint, sing songs at Handicraft, Art and Music. They also play a lot. In the 5th form secondary school begins. Secondary education is compulsory in Belarus. After the 9th form all students take exams in four subjects – Maths, Russian, Belarusian and History. After taking these examinations students get their first certificates and can complete their education in other educational establishments. But the majority of pupils stay at school until they finish their high school education at 18. There are four main types of higher education establishments to choose from, which can be either private or state operated: classical university, Profile University or academy, institute, higher college.

Do you agree that Belarusian secondary school provides a person with good knowledge? Why (not)? I agree with the fact that Russian and Belarusian system of education are among the best in the world. It’s proved by the results of different international Olympiads and contests.Secondary education in Belarus continues for seven years and it starts at the age of 10 or 11. During this period pupils get a lot of interesting and helpful knowledge. They not only study academic subjects but also learn how to communicate and to behave. Moreover teachers encourage pupils to find their future profession.

Ask me about my school life. Did you go to school with pleasure? What were your favourite subjects? What kinds of clubs did your school have? Did you like Languages or Science? Were you an excellent student or not? Were your parents satisfied with the results of your study? Did you sometimes cheat at school? Did you sometimes miss your lessons?

What can you advise a student who is not very good at languages to do to achieve better results? In order to be good at languages people should take any opportunity to practice them. It means reading English books, watching films in English with subtitles and listening to music in English. All these can help people memorize many English words and understand English better. Nowadays there are many educational channels on TV to improve English. I personally can recommend “English Club TV”. Also there are a lot of on-line programmes in the Internet which can be very helpful. The only problem is motivation and self-discipline.

Today some young people think that having a good education is not very important. Do you agree with them? We are living in the era of modern education. We cannot live without education. So education is very important nowadays. People who have diploma or a degree, who speak one or more foreign language fluently, who can work on a computer can get better jobs than those that do not have education. Silly are the people who believe that they can buy certificates and get a good position. Knowledge cannot be bought.

SCHOOL

Let’s talk about education. What can you tell me about your school? I’m a pupil of the 11th form. I study at school number 134. It’s quite an old school but with good facilities for learning. We have fully equipped laboratories for experiments in Physics and Chemistry where we can carry out scientific research. For language practice we have a classroom with multimedia computers. The stadium next to our school is modern and can be used for different sports and games. I go to school five days a week except Saturday and Sunday when I have my deserved rest. Classes in our school start at 8 o'clock in the morning and last till 14.30. Usually we have 6 or 7 lessons a day. We study different subjects: Russian, Belarusian, English, Russian and Belarusian literatures, History, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, etc. The aim or our school is to develop student’s talents and abilities.

Does your school differ from any other school you know? Yes, our school differs from some other school. We have so-called “gender-type’ education in our school which means that parents have an opportunity to choose from four kinds of classes for their children. There are cadets classes where only boys study. The second type is a class only for girls called “Alesya”. There are musical classes where all children are taught to play musical instruments. And finally, there are mixed classes for boys and girls who study together.

Ask me what kind of pupil I was at school. Did you go to school with pleasure? What was your favourite subject? Did you like Languages or Science? Were you an excellent student or not? Were your parents satisfied with the results of your study? Did you sometimes cheat at school? Did you sometimes miss your lessons?

You are talking with a British student. What would you advise him/her to do to prepare for an exam well? Preparations should start long before the exams. You should try to be organized and self-disciplined. Try to begin your preparations with your best subject. It will give you the feeling of self-confidence. Never leave your homework undone, always finish your work. Try to have enough sleep and drink plenty of water. And now some tips how to behave during your exams.Firstly, you should be calm. If you feel nervous, you can forget everything. Secondly, you should be self-confident. Thirdly, you should learn by hard things you should know (facts, dates). In addition to this, you should have a good rest before the exam, good sleep. As a result, you will have good knowledge and perfect marks.

Nowadays some young people complain that they have lots of problems at school. Do you agree with them? I agree with them to some extent. Every child has problems at school. They can be relationships with teachers or with peers. If a child has a conflict it can influence his or her interests in learning. Also, the absence of motivation can be a problem for children. Students always complain on lack of time. We should remember that everything depends on our attitude to study. If we think that we have problems we will have them.

School Traditions

What traditions does your school have? Our school has many traditions. Every month we have a special subject week, for example, a History week, a week of Foreign Languages and so on. During this week students of all forms have special lessons on this particular subject, competitions, contests, sometimes even drama performances. It’s fun. The Day of Knowledge, The New Year Ball, The Last Bell, Teacher’s Day and Women’s day are special holidays in every school. In my school on these days we have concerts for teachers and pupils. We have annual competitions, concerts, dancing and singing contests in our school, too.

Tell me about your favourite school tradition. There are many school traditions I like but my favourite one is Sports Week. It takes place every season. Pupils from 5 to 11 forms take part in it. This event is a good opportunity for students to show their athletic skills and abilities. There is a wide range of activities the Sports Week offers. We have competitions in different sports, we run, jump, swim, play sports games. The week finishes with a Closing ceremony where winners get their cups, medals and prizes.

What questions will you ask your British friend to know more about his or her school traditions? What traditions do you have at school? When do they take place? What is your favourite school tradition? Do you take part in all of them? Do you think it’s good to have school traditions? What activities do participants take part in? Will you attend reunion Day after you leave school?

Which school club would you advise your classmate to join? As a rule every school has a wide range of clubs and societies to meet the interests of each pupil. They offer opportunities to develop different talents and skills and test them in different school events.Sometimes it’s not easy to choose so you should remember the main tips. Firstly, it depends on his or a pupil’s talents and opportunities. Drama club will be a good idea for pupils who have theatrical abilities. If you are interested in learning foreign languages, foreign language club will be the perfect for you. Of course, don’t forget about physical exercises as sport is essential part of everybody’s life.

Sometimes when your class is to organize a school event the majority of students don’t want to take part in preparations. What do you think about it? Yes, it’s a big problem when people are too indifferent to social events. Sometimes it happens because they are not interesting in what’s happening or they have been pushed to do what they didn’t like before. But classmates and teachers should persuade these pupils to change their attitude and to be involved. How they manage to do it is another question.
