I. A description of a house for an advertisement

I. A DESCRIPTION OF A HOUSE FOR AN ADVERTISEMENT

When we write a description of a house for an advertisement we usually divide it into five paragraphs. In the first paragraph we say what type of house it is (i.e. semi-detached, a cottage, etc), where it is located and/or how old it is. In the main body we describe its external (e.g. garage, garden, etc) and internal (e.g. number of rooms, floors, etc) features and any special features it might have (e.g. central heating, air conditioning, etc). In the conclusion we give our comments and/or recommendations, saying why we think it is worth buying/renting.

a) Read the text and underline the correct word(s) in bold.

1) For Sale/Rent (asking price £250,000) Spectacular Home in "Paradise"

A - This 2) exceptional/ordinary 900 square metre villa is located on Paradise Beach in the Bahamas. Situated 3) on top of a hill/in the suburbs it offers an amazing view of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

B - This attractive 4) block of flats/luxurious home has a large front garden with a two-car garage and ample storage space. Behind the house there is a 5) basement/patio and a swimming pool surrounded by lush tropical plants and trees. On the second floor there is a 6) balcony/porch which extends around three sides of the house.

C - On the first floor there is a 7) family-sized/ cramped fitted kitchen, a separate dining room and a large L-shaped living room. 8) Upstairs/ Downstairs on the second floor there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

D - The villa has built-in 9) appliances/cupboards, tiled floors and air conditioning. There is also central heating and a water 10) cooler/ heater, so it can be lived in all year round.

E - This bright, sunny villa is the perfect family holiday home. It is also the ideal place for anyone in search of sun, sea and a touch of paradise.

Meeting the Landlord

Mr. Fein: Well, are you going to take the apartment? It's a magnificent apartment. You have a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The rent is very low for this neighborhood. Take it right away. Two more couples are coming this afternoon. It's difficult to find an apartment for only $ 135.00 a month.

Barbara: $ 135.00 a month? But... that's so much money!

Mr. Fein: Well, if you're not interested... I'm a busy man.

John: Wait a moment. Barbara, how about it?

Barbara: Well, the kitchen is nice. The living-room is sunny in the afternoon. It's not perfect, John, but it's better than living with Mother.

John: Good. Can we see the lease?

Mr. Fein: Here. Take a good look. It's a standard lease.

b) Answer the questions:

1. How many rooms are there in the apartment?

2. Is the rent really low?

3. What did Barbara like in the apartment?

4. Do you think Barbara and John will take it? Why?

c) Act out the dialogue with your partner.
