Presentation of the Pacific Coast States

PRESENTATION of the PACIFIC COAST STATES

Julia: Good morning, dear guests and TV viewers. Welcome to the breakfast show “Across the States”. I’m Julia Gold. Today we are discussing the Pacific Coast region of the United States. This region combines many climatic zones. The region includes the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska and Hawaii. We have invited to our studio the representatives of the three states. Meet our guests: Angela from Hawaii, Inna from California and Oksana from Alaska. We have a unique opportunity to ask them a series of questions about the vacations in these states. Let’s start. My first question is WHAT CAN YOU TELL ABOUT THE HISTORY OF YOUR STATE? Angela, will you start, please?

Angela: Hawaii is the last state which joined the United States in 1959. It is the only state made only of islands. Hawaii is also the name of the largest island. The capital and the largest city is Honolulu. The first people of Hawaii were Polynesians. They came to the islands sometime between 200 and 600 AD. Captain James Cook discovered the islands in 1778. He named the islands the Sandwich Islands.

Julia: Thank you. Now, let’s listen to Inna.

Inna: California is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous state, home to 1 out of 8 Americans, and it is the third largest state by area. The name “California” comes from the Spanish language as it was a Spanish territory. It means “hot as a stove”. In 1812 it became a part of Mexico. Shortly after in 1846 Americans took it. California is best known for the Gold Rush beginning in 1848. Forty-niners were the people who moved there in search for gold. That is why its nickname is Golden State. In the 20th century Los Angeles became the world-known entertainment centre with Hollywood as a movie hub. Technology and information sectors also develop greatly. The Silicon Valley is very famous. Thus, California attracts many tourists from home and abroad.

Julia: Thank you so much. Now, Oksana will speak for Alaska.

Oksana: Alaska was bought by the USA in 1867 for more than 7 million dollars. Since that moment the present time Alaska is the biggest state of America in which the fewest people in the USA live. Alaska is more commonly known as “The Last Frontier” or “The Land of the Midnight Sun”. The motto of Alaska is “North to the Future”.

Julia: That was very interesting. My next question is WHAT KIND OF CLIMATE HAVE YOU GOT IN YOUR STATE? Angela, please.

Angela: Hawaii doesn’t really have distinct seasons. There is winter which is warm, and summer which is warmer. Temperatures are near 20 - 30°C all the year round. It rains almost every day. Because the islands are so far from the continent, life there can be described by three Ws: wind, waves and wings (birds and insects).

Julia: Thanks a lot. And now it’s Inna’s turn.

Inna: California’s climate varies from Mediterranean to subarctic. Most of the state has a Mediterranean climate with cool rainy winters and dry warm summers. Sierra Nevada Mountains region have an alpine climate with snow in winter. In the Cascade Range part it can be very cold in winter, and rainy in summer.

Julia: Thank you. What about Alaska, Oksana?

Oksana: On the Pacific Coast the climate is moderate, rather soft. In other areas, the climate is arctic and subarctic continental with severe winters. The highest temperature recorded was 37 degrees above zero and the lowest – 62 degrees below zero.

Julia: Oh, how very interesting! Thank you all. You see, that everyone can find a climate to his own liking in the region. Let’s pass over to the next question: WHAT SIGHTS ATTRACT TOURISTS TO YOUR STATES? Angela, start, please.

Angela: There is no place on earth like Hawaii! Hawaii is a paradise and is often shown in movies and television. The island is a magnet for nature lovers and for people looking for a relaxing holiday. Popular tourist sights include Waikiki Beach, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Polynesian Cultural Centre, and the US Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Hawaii’s different nature, warm tropical climate, lots of public beaches, oceanic scenery, and active volcanoes make it a popular place for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanoes alike. The biggest industry in Hawaii is tourism. Almost 7 million people visit the islands every year.

Julia: Thanks a lot, Angela. What about California?

Inna: California is ideal for tourists. There are many entertainment centres there, like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, and others. You can visit famous Hollywood and its Walk of Fame, see the fantastic Golden Gate Bridge or the largest oceanarium in the world, enjoy the scenery of the Death Valley National Park, or relax in the theme parks – Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland. The list is endless.

California’s culture is influenced by Spanish culture very much. Many immigrants from Latin America bring their traditions there. Besides, California is a kind of paradise for holiday-makers. It can boast beautiful golden beaches and excellent spas.

Julia: Thank you, Inna. We would love to visit California, wouldn’t we? Oksana, is there anything interesting in Alaska?

Oksana: Of course! There are a lot of beautiful glaciers in Alaska. The highest point – Mount McKinley – is visited by tourists. The longest river is the Yukon. There are some national parks there as well: Denali NP, Kobuk NP, Glacier NP. The nature is preserved very well there. You can also meet the Eskimos in Alaska.

Julia: Thank you so much! Well, I have the final question for you all: WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE OUTSTANDING PEOPLE OF YOUR STATE?

Angela: Hawaii has been home to many notable people that have become well-known beyond the shores of the islands. Among them are a professional wrestler Brian Adams, a rock singer Jack Johnson, an actress Nicole Kidman, and others. But the most famous person who was born in Hawaii is, of course, the 44th President of the USA – Barrack Obama!

Julia: Oh, really! Fantastic! And now it’s Inna’s turn.

Inna: California is also known for its alternative lifestyles and new ideas. Many artists, writers, actors, producers and other people from the movie industry live there. The 37th President Richard Nixon was born in California, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is a world-famous actor, director, producer and an ex-governor of the state.

Julia: Of course, we know him – “I’ll be back!” Right. And who was born in Alaska, I wonder?

Oksana: There are some famous people in Alaska such as Jewell (an actress and a singer), Nathan West (an actor), Margaret Elizabeth Bell (a writer) and many others.

Julia: I see. OK, thank you for answering my questions. We have known a lot about the Pacific States region today. Now you have got a chance to ask questions to our guests. Look at the maps of the states with the realias on them. After a few minutes, you can come up with the questions! Well done!

Dear guests, we have got something interesting for you. Would some of you like to learn a couple of elements of the traditional Hawaiian dance or learn several phrases in the Hawaiian language? Angela will help you!

Angela: Hawaii is known as the “Aloha State”. Aloha is a Hawaiian word that has many meanings like “welcome”, “ hello” and “goodbye”. Aloha also means “love” and “care”. The different meanings are brought together in the term “Aloha Spirit” to describe the friendly people of Hawaii. The state of Hawaii has two official languages: English and Hawaiian. So, will you repeat some words and expressions after me?

That was superb! And now I need two volunteers to come up to me. I’m going to show you the elements of the traditional Hawaiian dance. Please, follow me! Great! Thank you.

Julia: And one more surprise for you. Let’s listen to the song “I love you, California!” Join in singing with us!

Fantastic! Isn’t it a wonderful way to finish up our breakfast show? I hope you have enjoyed it, and have decided where to spend your next vacation. For more information contact the travel agency “Pacific”. Make sure to watch our next program. We will be taking you somewhere high to the skies! Where is it? Wait and watch!
