Steps of reviewing the text

STEPS OF REVIEWING THE TEXT

1. Before reviewing the text (i.e. if you work with it at home), photocopy it.

2. Scan it and underline or highlight key words in the photocopy.

3. Number the major points sequentially making notes for yourself in the margins.

4. Find the main idea. Review all the major points in your list and choose the single idea that best expresses the central issue of the text. The main idea (or thesis) often appears at the end or at the beginning of it.

5. When you begin writing, set the text aside and work from your list. Use your own words in the review. If you must, refer to the text to quote ONLY THOSE PHRASES THAT CANNOT BE BETTER EXPRESSED IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

6. Organize your review. In the first sentence state the thesis. Then proceed in a logical manner, presenting the material in the same order as in the original.Record objectively what you read. Even though you use your own words, do not introduce any of your own ideas. You may give your own opinion of the text at the end of the review.

7. Make your review concise. Your final draft should be approximately 10% to 20% the length of the original text.

8. Compare what you have written with the original. If you find you have omitted major ideas, or included minor details, revise your review. Use subordination and / or coordination to clarify relationships between ideas.

9. Include bibliographic information. Do not include this information in the actual review, but put it at the top of the page.
