More and more young people in the modern world are becoming drug - addicted.

One of the most “popular” examples of drugs is Ecstasy, which is widely spread in night clubs.

Users of ecstasy say that taking it is completely safe. However, anti-drug campaigns say it is completely unsafe. Unfortunately, anti-drug campaigns don’t solve the problem as their tactics often scare or annoy young people. This means young people often refuse to listen to the scientific facts.

Ecstasy damages the whole nervous system. Drug-addicted people suffer from psychological problems, like memory loss and depression. What is more, when some drugs like Ecstasy are taken your body starts to overheat. Some people’s blood temperature can reach 43 degrees and they die as blood changes its structure.

Think about these questions. Then discuss your ideas?

1. Do you know what kind of problems can drugs cause? Name at least three.

2. Why do young people become drug-addicted?

3. What can be done to minimize the number of young people who die each year from drugs?

Shirley is 14 years-old right now, so you can only imagine how young she was when she started drinking alcohol and using drugs. One day she met an older guy who asked her if she wanted to get high one day. So she did and her drug use became more frequent.

At the time, I was visiting a lot of chat rooms and meeting druggie guys. Then Shirley started buying drugs online. Because her mom was working all the time and my dad was in prison, it was easy to hide the whole truth. It wasn’t until I refused to go to school that my mom put me in treatment. I’m 7 months into it and glad to be recovering.

If I had anything to share with parents, especially if they are divorced or separated, it would be this. Be on the same page about your kid, even if you hate each other. I used my parents against each other all the time, making it easier for me to get in trouble. Check in with your kid often, and sneak around if you suspect something. Learn how to check a computer history log. If my mom knew how to do that, she would have discovered my problem a lot earlier. Fact is, I never erased it. And think to yourself, “something is up,” if you keep seeing blank screens every time you walk by your kid’s computer or get a lot of “nothing” type responses when you ask “what are you up to?”
