Synonyms: Cure For The Common Word

Synonyms: Cure For The Common Word

Common words are over-used. People say them all the time when they could use words that better explain their meaning.

Example: Nice

He is nice. His mom is a nice person too. Their whole family is really nice. They are just nice people. I hope I can be as nice as they are!

Nice was over-used five times in this paragraph! It is too boring and repetitive to read 'nice' over and over again.

Writer’s Tip … Make your writing more interesting and use exact words to describe the meaning.

Example 2: Nice

He is so helpful. His mom is a kind and helpful person too. Their whole family is very generous and supportive. They are just friendly, caring people. I hope I can be as good and loving as they are!

Without using “nice” the author wrote exactly how the family is nice.

Synonyms are words that have the same meaning. They help authors vary the words used in writing.

Practice: Rewrite the following paragraphs to vary the word choice with synonyms:

There is a new puppy in our family! He is a small puppy now but he’ll grow fast. He has small feet and a small, pink nose. We named him Diesel because he runs so fast for such a small puppy. When he sleeps, Diesel’s small ears move around. I love his small, black eyes. He has a cute puppy face. Diesel is so small and I can carry him. I really love our new, small puppy!

My parents bought a new car. It drives so fast! It can go faster than our other car. The new car has a faster engine and better motor. It’s awesome! My dad drove it really fast around our street. He was going so fast, the tires screeched on the road. The neighbors said, “Whose fast car is that? It’s the fastest car in the neighborhood.” I told them when I’m older and can drive, I will have a fast car too. Maybe even faster than my parent’s fast car!
