In 1986 Gallup conducted a survey among random Americans. The purpose of the survey was to discover the attitude of citizens towards handgun control in the USA.

The sale of handguns

From the table of data it is obvious that there was a general decrease of people who supported stricter laws covering the sale of handguns from 1975 to 1986. Not surprisingly, the quantity of people who stood for less stricter laws went up from 3 to 8 percent and civilians who wanted the laws to stay as they were rose by 1986 on 6 percent. Though still 60 percent of people supported the idea to make this law stricter, the general tendency is that these views are becoming less popular and this may be connected with the desire of people to use handguns as self-defense.

Laws banning the sale of handguns

According to the survey 47 percent of all respondents found the banning laws necessary for the community. However, only 39 percent of men favored a banning law whereas 55 percent of women supported it. This probably happened because men are biologically more active and likely to behave in a deviant way. The majority of men possess the desire to protect themselves and their families on their own using physical strength and weapons.

Whites and blacks

Very surprisingly this banning law was not as popular among whites as it was among blacks. Only 45 percent of all white respondents voted for the introduction of the banning law when 59 percent of blacks did that.

Conclusion

If any conclusions can be drawn from the data, they are, perhaps, as follows. In general people tended to stand against the distribution of handguns but the tendency was going down until 1986. More and more people wanted less strict laws by 1986. At the same time almost a half of all respondents favored the law banning the sale and possession of handguns.
