1. The cargo plane, IL-76T, occupies a special place in the family of glorious aircraft produced by stages according to the long-term programme for designing wide-bodied airliners. The plane’s designation prompted the choice of its optimal forms: the fuselage is sloping in its tail part which makes handling operations more convenient. It rests in the air on the so-called sagging wings with powerful twin engines each. Tests proved not only the accuracy of concrete desigh calculations, but also the promising future for further experiments. A brilliant example is IL-86, the firstling of the Soviet wide-bodied jet liners.

2. IL-76T appeared on the Aeroflot routes in 1977. Thanks to its high cargo-lifting capacity (up to 40 tons), IL-76T largely intensified the cargo turnover on the most important projects of the national economy.

3. Building materials, pipes, the equipment for drilling installations, tractors, cars, consumer goods, metalwork, machine-tools and foodstuffs – all these are delivered with guaranteed safety and always on time on board IL-76T to the places where the cargo can reach only by air. Indifference to takeoff-landing conditions, highly mechanized on-board handling equipment (the plane has four electric hoists with the cargo-lifting capacity of 2,500 kilograms each and two electric hoists, LPG-3000 A, with the handling capacity of 3,000 kilograms each) have made IL-76T indispensable in hard-to-access and remote parts of the country.

MICS

1. Miami Airport’s recently activated MICS (Miami International Cargo System), the first totally integrated automated cargo processing system of its kind in the U.S., permits all documentation to be processed electronically and tracks all shipments in and out of Miami. It links the airlines, freight forwarders, brokers, customs and the Department of agriculture. British Telecom Applied Technology, developer of MICS, based its design on BTAT’s pioneering LACES (London Airport Cargo EDP System) which was installed at London Heathrow Airport in 1969, and LACES’ descendants, ACP 80(1981) and 90(1987).

2. When LACES was installed, there was an immediate drop in average clearance times for cargo at Heathrow from four days to less than an hour, with 85% taking only 30 minutes. Clearance time for trans-shipments was virtually instantaneous.

3. LACES became obsolescent when the airlines began installing their own on line tracking systems tailored to their own specific needs. Usually these could not exchange data with other systems, including LACES, so the airlines had to enter consignment details separately into both the airport system and their own system. But advances in computer technology and software now make it possible to provide interfaces that allow data to flow freely between different systems.

Caroline connects cargo computers

1. Different airlines have their own computerized cargo systems. The problem is that while all these are fine systems, few of them can communicate with each other.

2. The new Cargo On LINE (CAROLINE) system links all external and internal cargo-shipping participants into one paperless flow of information.

3. Airlines want to be linked with the large network of agents, forwarders, shippers, banks, customs offices and other segments of the cargo community.

4. The key phrase to computerized cargo systems is Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). This is what eliminates the endless process of telephone calls, facsimile and telex messages, and waybill shipments.

5. SAS used EDI to create an electronic switchboard, enabling its computers to communicate with computers used by the cargo industry throughout Scandinavia. This is the Trade Vision.

6. Trade Vision communicates in Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transportation (EDI FACT), one of two major computer languages and the one used by the United Nations. The other, used by IATA, is IMP, or Interchange Message Procedures. Cargo operators use CARGO IMP.

7. Trade Vision will be used as the core of the new system, which forms a community of cargo computer programs. Essentially, it will serve two functions. The first is networking, which allows users to communicate. Like a well-trained telephone operator, this system takes incoming calls and sends them out to the proper office.

8. The second is the data bank, or information library, which provides users with rates, routings, customs requirements, hazardous-cargo requirements, tracking and the myriad information needed to ship cargo throughout the world. Anyone using the system will be able to sit at a single computer terminal and send and/or receive all necessary data for the shipment of a piece of cargo.

9. The communication-networking function also “translates” the incoming message into the appropriate language for transmittal.

10. Overall benefits provided by the system include better service and higher efficiency; approximately 10 % reduction in staff, reduced operative and maintenance costs.

Cargo copter service

1. Damin Express fills a niche in the New York metropolitan area. The niche is a charter helicopter cargo service that gets shipments from four Manhattan heliports and outlying suburbs to the area’s major airports in minutes instead of the hours it could take Via Gotham’s crowded roads, bridges and tunnels.

2. To customers such as small package express couriers, forwarders this confers the ability to accept shipments a couple of hours later and still make connections. A cargo agent accompanies each flight and helps load and unload the copter.

KLM CARGO

1. KLM’s commitment to cargo goes back to its founding. On its first scheduled flight, from London to Amsterdam in May 1920 in a leased de Havilland DH-16, in addition to two passengers, it carried 15 Lbs of newspapers under the captain’s seat. Today as much as 10,000 tons a week of cargo – freight and mail – move through KLM’s cargo copter at Schiphol airport.

2. KLM cargo used to think of itself as a transportation system, now it thinks of itself as a logistics or distribution system. As such, it aims not only to be the transportation bridge between shippers and their consignees, but also to assist them in improving their own logistics systems.

3. KLM carries out PDS – Publication Services. The basic idea of PDS is simple. Overseas customers ship their printed matter (usually via KLM) in bulk to the center. PDS separates the shipments into individual pieces and prepares them for the Dutch postal system with individual wrappers and address labels. The postal system distributes them to addressees in Holland and to other countries’ postal systems.

Key to GCS success

1. Frankfurt – German Cargo Services, the 100% Lufthansa – owned freight airline, has lived through some difficult times.

2. GCS was founded in March 1977 from a decision by Lufthansa to form a separate cargo carrier using Boeing 707-320Cs. Four of these were transferred from the parent airline.

3. The airline has specialized in the carriage of livestock since 1980. It developed aluminium horse stalls in double and triple units, and special aliminium containers with watertight floor protection for cattle.

4. The success of GCS over the past decade, in spite of some “extremely difficult circumstances”, had been due to its future-oriented marketing concept.

Your Journey Starts Today.

1. The day before your journey, please, study again the data in your ticket:

- airport of departure;

- departure check-in time.

This is the time by which passengers should be at the airline check-

-in desk to be accepted for the flight.

2. The time indicated on each of the flight coupons of your ticket is the departure time of the aircraft. The interval before this time is the minimum of time necessary for all standard airport, customs, passport and other formalities concerning your flight.

Numbers of pieces carried as well as baggage weight presented at the check-in desk will be marked by the airport officer on your flight coupons in boxes “checked/unchecked baggage” and “pieces/kg” on the lower part of the ticket.

5. The above marks shall be the basic data to be taken into consideration in case of damage during transportation.

Each one of your pieces of baggage will be tagged with a baggage tag with a serial number and the final destination of your baggage.

The other piece of the baggage tag is stuck to the cover of your baggage.

6. After the check-in you will be given a boarding pass containing your family name, flight number and departure time, exit number etc. Keep this boarding pass at hand and present it together with the other documents to the passport and customs control authorities, until you board the airplane. You should keep the piece of boarding pass remaining with you till the end of your journey, as it may be requested on the board of the aircraft or in the transit/ transfer airports.

Ticket Validity

1. You are kindly requested to buy your ticket or confirm your reservation within the time limits specified. If that is not done your reservation will be cancelled.

2. The passenger ticket and baggage check for an international flight issued in your name is personal and cannot be conceded to another person. Please study carefully the notes on your ticket and particularly the contract conditions and remarks and notices in it. Your ticket is issued at a normal fare and is valid for one year as of the date of commencement of flight. If no portion of the ticket is used then it is valid for one year as of the date of issue. 4. Passengers are invited to reserve their seats well in advance. Application can be made at any airline office or travel agency. The seat may be, however, reserved only after the ticket of the respective flight has been purchased.

5. Confirmed seat is indicated in the “ Reservation Status” box of the ticket by code “OK”.

6. Code “RQ” indicates that it was not possible to confirm the requested seat yet. If a passenger has reserved his seat in advance for the return or continuing flight, he is in some cases obliged to reconfirm his intention to use such reservation to the air-carrier at the departure point of the return or continuing flight. Failure to comply may result in the cancellation of the onward or return reservation.

7. Should it be not possible to use the seats reserved, we ask the passengers to let us know as early as possible. Passengers cancelling their seats too late or failing to report for departure or being insufficiently documented so that they are not allowed to travel, may be required to pay a fee which is 25% of the applicable one-way fare.

Some Rules of Carriage

1. Sick and invalid passenger and expectant mothers can be transported only when all conditions stipulated by the carrier are complied with.

2. Dangerous goods and articles can be carried only subject to special conditions. Important Information

Baggage. Your free allowance may be limited by any combination of weight, number of pieces and dimensions. Baggage in excess of the free allowance is subject to extra charge. Please, check with your reservations or ticket office before starting your journey.

For security reasons carry-on baggage, which can be placed underseat or overhead, is generally limited to one piece, which should not exceed 8x14x18 inches (21x36x46 sm).

It is the responsibility of passengers to ensure that their documents are valid, however British Airways will gladly furnish information concerning passport, visas, and vaccination requirements. You are also advised to obtain official advice from the Embassies or Consulates of the countries to be visited.

Smoking. Certain areas in British Airways, aircraft are set aside for passengers who smoke. Do not smoke outside these areas or in the toilets.

If you wish to be seated in either a smoking or non-smoking area, please request this when you check-in.

Description of Ticket

1. A ticket presents a booklet with tear-off coupons of different colours. On the front cover of the ticket there are the airline’s flag, its address and complete name of the ticket. In the upper right-hand corner of the ticket there are the airline form number of four digits a sereal number of eight digits and in the upper left-hand corner a Roman numeral indicates the number of flight coupons contained in the ticket.

2. On the inside part of the front cover (page 2), on pages 3-8 “Conditions of Contract”, “Advice to International passengers on limitation of liability” are printed; there is also indication of town terminal address and the time of check-in at the airport. There are also lists of articles allowed to be carried free and restricted to carriage.

3. These are followed by the tear-off coupns of three colours. “Audit Coupon” (green colour) serves for verification of correctness of application of fares and for control purposes Upon completion it is withdrawn and together with the ticket sales report is forwarded to the International Revenue Accounting Centre. A passenger receives a ticket without this coupon. “Agent Coupon” (pink colour) is a document to be accepted if the following flight coupon appears to have been used.

4. The inside part of the back cover of the ticket – “Passenger Coupon” – is a document to be remained in the passenger’s possession upon completion of carriage and serves as evidence of the contract of carriage.

1. Group Discount. Within Europe common interest groups of 10 persons or more are granted a discount of 5% and groups of 15 persons or more a discount of 10% of one-way or round trip fares. This applies to all public fares except the special group fares.

2. Family Discount. A family discount of 50% is available on certain European round or circle trip fares to depended family members: wife and/or husband and children between 12 and 25 years of age.

3. Discount for Youths and Students. 25% reduction of a normal economy class fare is available to passengers between 12 and 22 years of age within Europe. Students aged 12-26 who are studying at least for one term at an educational establishment are entitled to the same discount. 50% reduction of a normal economy class fare is available to youths between 12 and 26 years of age.

4. Reduction for Infants and Children. Infants under 2 years of age ticketed at 10% of the applicable adult fare if each is accompanied by a passenger paying the adult fare and if not occupying a seat. Infants under 2 years of age occupying individual seats, or infants in excess of one accompanied by a passenger paying the applicable adult fare, as well as children between 2 and 12 years of age, are ticketed at 50% of the applicable adult fare. Unaccompanied children are carried according to special regulations.

5. Terms of freightage. We accept payment for charter in cash, by cheque or by letter of credit.

Cargo for our country’s foreign trade associations and for foreign organizations and firms accredited in this country can be carried by our airline with payment on credit. In addition to normal tariffs fixed depending on the route of carriage and the weight of cargo, we widely use co-rates-tariffs at a discount for various categories and individual types of cargoes.

Selection of fares and rates

1. There are two main categories of passenger fares on scheduled services, known as normal and special fares. Normal fares include first-class and economy-class fares also called tourist-class fares in certain regions, which are available to members of general public without restriction.

2. The level of normal fares tends to vary on a given route according to the season (peak, shoulder and off-peak) and, in certain cases, may also vary by day or week or time (mid-week, weekend and combinations thereof or night travel).

Indeed, several excursion fares may be quoted on a given route. Any special fare proposed to be introduced must be based on market research. It should always be designed to fill otherwise empty seats on say low density days or hours in the day, where the scheduled flight needs a boost. One must be able to determine the objective and properly estimate the results.

Cargo rates

1. A similar distinction between normal and special categories can be made with respect to cargo rates, known respectively as general cargo rates and specific commodity and class rates. The general cargo rates are set at different levels according to the weight of the shipment, but regardless of the nature or value of the commodity being shipped. These rates frequently vary according to the direction of shipment.

Specific commodity rates are designed, in particular, to meet the needs of shippers of bulk consignments of specific commodities between two points and the system is complex. In addition, it should be noted that special discounts are available on some routes to shippers using various types of standardized containers.

4. It is important to note that fares and rates used represent and indication of the price paid by passengers and shippers and should not be confused with the actual revenue yield to the airline. The net yield is the amount of revenue received by the airline after payment of commissions to travel and cargo agents (and to freight forwarders who are also cargo agents) and other selling and participating airlines.

International Airport Passenger Services

Passport Control. The outgoing passengers may leave the country only if they have an exit visa and a foreign passport. The incoming passengers must have an entry visa, a foreign passport and a vaccination certificate. The visas and foreign passports should be produced to the Passport officer at the Passport control.

Customs control. At every International Airport there is a Customs Control. A passenger may carry duty free articles provided they are for personal use. Restricted articles may be imported, but in this case they are liable to Customs duty.

At the Customs Control passengers must fill in a Customs declaration and then produce it to the Customs officer, who checks the declaration and inspects the passengers’ luggage. Any article that has not been declared or produced is liable to forfeiture and the person concerned is liable to prosecution.

As for the crew it is not obligatory to fill in Customs declaration. The crew members are only asked some questions about their hand luggage which is then inspected on board the aircraft.

Some things are prohibited to be exported – weapons, narcotics, antiques and objects of art (paintings, drawings, icons, sculptures), precious metals, crude, and processed natural precious stones, valuables, etc.

If you have nothing more than the duty-free allowance and no prohibited or restricted goods go straight through the Green Channel unless asked to stop by an officer.

If you have more than the duty-free allowance listed or if you have prohibited or restricted goods go into the Red Channel and declare them to an officer.

Plant Quarantine Inspection. Any load or baggage containing seeds, bulbs, cuttings, vegetables and fruit are subject to the Plant Quarantine Inspection. A passenger must have a special licence to carry plant materials. This document should be produced to the State inspection of the Plant Quarantine Point.

Veterinary control. Transportation of animals, birds, live fish, insects and products of animal origin is under the inspection of the Veterinary Control. A passenger should have a medical certificate for animal (a dog, a cat) to carry it in the passenger cabin.

Upon Arrival and Before Return Flight

1. At stopover airports and / or destinations please look for your checked baggage. It should be kept in mind that most suitcases, travel bags etc. are very similar in kind and unintentional substitutions are quite possible. Such happenings should be avoided if you compare the serial number of the baggage tag the one stuck on each piece of baggage.

2. If you continue your journey by another flight and / or airline, please inquire:

- if your baggage had duly arrived if not, ask that a “Property Irregularity Report” be prepared immediately for you;

- if it is necessary to present your baggage in person to the customs control authorities (as it is the practice in the country).

3. Please examine carefully each separate piece of your checked baggage upon arrival and inform right away the airport officers for any irregularity established by you.

If you arrive to a foreign country and some of your baggage is missing you are entitled to a limited amount of local money to buy articles of first necessity, such as toilet articles, etc. Some of the airlines offer men’s and ladies’ toilet kits instead.

4. Before leaving the airport it is advisable to take advance information about the different formalities, concerning your further journey such as: the check – in dead – line, airport and customs regulations, surface transportation between the airport and the city.
