”for all it's worth and for what(ever) it's worth”

”for all it's worth and for what(ever) it's worth”

if it has any value. (Usually implies lack of confidence.) My idea—for all it's worth—is to offer them only $300. Here is my thinking, for whatever it's worth. Ask her to give us her opinion, for what it's worth.”

“for what it’s worth…” – A second-hand-impro

http://loppisimpro.blogspot.com/ (only in Norwegian, but with photos from the first edition in Tromsø)

concept and producer: Hege Pålsrud.

“For what it’s worth” is an inter-disiplinary contemporary art-project where artists investigate how the value of things come about, transform, disappear and literally becomes trash. This is happening at a second-hand-market with artistic improvisations.

The first edition took place in Tromsø 31. January 2010.

The second edition will take place in Petrozavodsk 8.-9. June 2013. The artistic director Hege Pålsrud, is collaborating with Okhta Onega Group and their cultural manager Nathalia Sevets-Ermolina.

The concept is about consumption and preferences. How do change of value come about? How does it works differently in different settings and cultures? How do we view, value, or reject things? When does an abject become trash?

The method is to merge a second hand market together with artistic improvisation by artists from different disciplines. The aim is to see if artistic interpretation and reflection around objects can change the way we think and construct value for ourselves. The artists are challenged to find an artistic approach to view the objects for sale, to interact with both buyers and sellers at the market – and each other.

The artists are: concept and stage design: Hege Pålsrud (NO) – dancers/actors: Liv Hanne Haugen (NO), Maria Valeeva (RU) Jussi Salminen (FI) – writer: Morten Wintervold (NO) – lightdesign: Ingeborg Staxrud Olerud (NO) – sound/music: Victor Shubin (RU), Ivan Afanasyev (RU) – Anja Kuts (RU) – Lena Filatova (RU) – video: Dimitry Trifonov (RU) – photo: Ingun A. Mæhlum (NO) – journalist: Nathalia Sevets-Ermolina (RU). Some more artists are still to be invited in Petrozavodsk.

The scene is a second-hand market at the closed down factory, Alexandrovsky Zavod, in Petrozavodsk. Like the theme of the project, the space is also in for changes of use and value.

The audience is not merely audience to the artistic performance. They have their own agenda as buyers and sellers at the market. Together with the artists they share the moment of transaction of objects. They witness and partake when an object change value – and owner. Unlike traditional artwork, where artists pre-produce their expression and message to the world, this project aim to let the audience take part in a true dialogue about the content of the artistic expressions. It is the audience who bring the objects and know their history – as sellers, or have a special interest in them – as buyers. The artists must rely their expression on what is brought to the market by the audience.

Background: Through the Norwegian Barents Secretariat, several cultural projects have been developed between artists and organizations in Tromsø (Norway) and Petrozavodsk (Russia). Hege Pålsrud find this an interesting network for her art project “for what it’s worth...”
