The preposition in generally refers to being inside something: Adam stood alone in the elevator. (Адам стоял в лифте один)
The preposition into generally means movement toward the inside of something: Adam walked into the elevator. (Адам вошел в лифт один)
‘I went in the house’ or ‘I went into the house’. Разница между «in» и «into» – во втором предложении подчеркивается что вы «вошли».
