Social stratification is a hierarchy of position with regard to economic production with influences the social rewards in those positions. It is worth mentioning that the emergence of social stratification supposes the presence of social inequality.

As any phenomenon social stratification has its distinctive characteristics. Firstly, stratification is the consequence of the development of society. First types of the societies were very simple and everyone was involved in food production thats why their members had equal standing and were interdependent.

Secondly, there are some major historical forms of stratification: slavery, feudalism and caste. Slavery is characterized by social inequality and the ownership of some persons by others. Caste is the system of social inequality in which personal status depends on his or her parents’ status and there is no opportunity to change it. Feudalism is an estate in which land workers were to pay rent to landowners.

Thirdly, stratified societies have an unequal distribution of wealth and hierarchical arrangement of people that is based on the amount of wealth and power they possess. This factor is the main reason for emergence of social conflicts.

Moreover different forms of social inequality still exist in our world though modern society is supposed to be equal without any limitation social stratification still exists. For example India is the country with strong social inequality where everyone still believes in his belonging to the caste.

In conclusion, the concept of social stratification refers to the idea that society is separated into different strata, guided by the underlying structures in the social system
