٭Fact file: The invention of the word ‘soccer’ is credited to Charles Wreford-Brown, a member of the Blackheath club, who when asked whether he was going to play ‘rugger’ (means rugby) answered he would prefer to play ‘soccer’ instead. This play on the phrase ‘ association football’ remains in place 150 years on, although it is more widely used today in emerging sporting nations. In England, the word will always take second place to the more simple and self-explanatory – ‘football’.
