taking the fight to

NEWSCASTER:

Having my identity stolen was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I received an email from a company I had dealt with previously asking me to confirm my payment and shipping information. The email contained a link to a website that looked the same as the one I had previously used. I entered my information into the required fields on the page and clicked 'submit'. The next day I checked my bank account and found that five thousand dollars was missing.

NEWSCASTER:

I checked my statement and found that my card had been used to buy products and services around the world. You've guessed it I was yet another victim of a phishing scam. Police estimate that American citizens are conned out of two hundred million dollars a year - it's becoming a really big problem! First, be very wary of which links you click on when you're sent an email. Banks and e-commerce sites will never ask for your personal details by email.

NEWSCASTER:

When ever you get an email like this, delete it straight away! Second, be very wary of any emails coming from people claiming to be in possession of a large amount of money that they will share with you for a fee. These are known as four one nine Scams'' after the number of the crime in the Nigerian criminal code; the country where many of these emails originate from. These emails appeal to the greed of those who receive them, promising a huge amount of money if the recipient forwards a relatively small amount of money to the sender. Of course, the money never arrives and the scam artist disappears with the money you sent them!

NEWSCASTER:

You may also have seen ads for 'work at home'' business opportunities offering you the means to setup your own business at home and make 'thousands of dollars'' a week? Don't get caught by this one! Once again, the scammers are trying to appeal to the greed of those reading the ads. It certainly looks enticing doesn't it - you get to stay in the comfort of your own home and make thousands a week while doing so. The problem is that you'll be asked to send a fee to these people in order to get the materials you need to set up your new business.

NEWSCASTER:

Guess what? These materials never arrive! You've just lost your money, and sometimes this could be a very large amount indeed. There are some people who are taking the fight to the scammers. These people are known as Internet Vigilantes, or Digilantes.

These people pretend to be fooled by the scam artists, but in fact try to manipulate them into revealing personal information such as photographs. Some Digilantes even claim that they have been able to scam the scammers by convincing them to send money to them! The Internet can be a dangerous place if you don't keep your wits about you - stay careful out there!

Expansion: Uses of '-ing' verbs

There are multiple uses for -ing verbs. You can use verb + -ing for continuous tenses serving as the background to a narrative.

I was calling the police to report identity theft.

I found out they 're investigating their biggest fraud case yet.

To add more detail to an action, you can use a phrase with verb + -ing after connectors like when and while.

When looking through my junk mail, I noticed a phishing scam.

The waiter stole my information while processing my credit card in the back room.

A phrase with verb + -ing can act as a noun in the subject or object of a sentence, or the object of a preposition.

Being wary is wise.

I tried warning him about being so greedy.

Some phrases with verb + -ing can function as adjectives. These are called participle phrases (participle phrases). They can come at the beginning or end of a sentence. Notice that the second sentence uses two participle phrases, one after the other.

Shopping online one day, I almost made a big mistake.

They're scam artists, stealing personal detailsusing cutting edge technology.

Sarah Walker knows all too well how easy it is to be a victim of fraud. In 2004, while she was paying for dinner with her credit card, someone in the restaurant stole the number. “When I got my credit card statement, I discovered someone was using my card to buy electronics that I could never afford!” she explains.
Since then, Sarah has been especially concerned about identity theft. So she is extremely careful with personal information, including her name, address and bank account number. “Yes, I am very cautious!” she says, “I don’t even throw away junk mail with my personal information on it. I burn or shred that kind of thing!”
The internet is another place where she is cautious. “The internet is an exciting technology…I like online shopping, but there’s so much buying and selling online, it’s easy to accidentally give untrustworthy people your personal information. So I think the internet can also be a confusing technology. ”

Sarah is wise to consider the dangers of the internet. Whereas, in the past, scam artists found their victims while they were looking for personal information in people’s garbage and recycling, today they are finding their victims online, too.

Scamming has become really prevalent in the days of e-commerce. While reading the news, I heard about a ring of scam artists called 'The Black Plague.' They had been conning senior citizens for 10 years. I immediately looked at my account transactions online, being paranoid. Turns out I had some fraudulent transactions. The bank is working on investigating the cause of the fraud, but I'll bet it's 'The Black Plague'stealing my money.
