1. Why are you applying for this course?

Try to jot down some notes on the following points:

- Coursework or practical work have you enjoyed in your current studies.
- Any relevant work experience you have completed.
- Books, news articles, research papers or anything else you have recently read.
- Personal experiences that have influenced you.
- Where you hope a degree in this subject will take you in the future.

2. Why are you interested in this subject?

Think about specific aspects you find fascinating - it’s important you try to pick out one or two, and explain in detail WHY they are so interesting. GIVE EXAMPLES to back this up. E.g. if you’re applying for Economics, you might talk about the behaviour of firms and highlight a recent news story about the activities of a particular company.

3. Your current or previous studies

Think about how these will help you on your chosen course, and give specific examples. E.g. if you’re applying for Chemistry, you might talk about how you enjoy the practical element of your A level studies in the subject, and how it can be applied to many aspects of everyday life.

4. Personal skills

What skills do you have that will help you during the course? Check the content of the course you’re applying for, so you can write about how they will be useful. E.g. if you’re applying for Maths you might talk about you applied your numeracy skills and developed them during a work experience placement at a financial company.

5. Work experience

What work experience placements have you completed that are relevant to your course? Did you learn any new skills and/or develop your knowledge of the subject area? How did you apply your existing skills and what did you achieve?

6. Extracurricular activities

What do you do outside of your studies that is relevant to your chosen course? Think about any teams, clubs or societies you’re a part of. E.g. if you’re applying for Geography, you might talk about how playing in a local football team has allowed you to travel around and raised your awareness of environmental differences throughout the UK.

7. Achievements

Mention any awards you’ve won, positions of responsibility you’ve held or unique skills you possess. E.g. if you’re applying for Archeology, you may have learnt to read hieroglyphics, or if you’re applying for Sports Science you might mention that you represent your school rugby team.

8. Hobbies and Interests

Have you learned any skills through hobbies and interests that will help you excel in your degree? E.g. if you’re applying for Music, you might talk about how joining the local choir allowed you to improve your vocal range.

9. Personal experiences

Think about your background - is there anything in your past that has influenced you to study this subject in more detail? E.g if you are applying for Marine Biology, you might talk about how experiences from holidays overseas made you become interested in the variety of underwater life.

10. Career plans

If you have a particular career path in mind, write down how your degree will help you achieve this. If you’re not sure what you want to do after uni, think about the skills and knowledge your degree will give you, and how this might help you in the future.

11. International students

Write down your reasons for wanting to study in the UK.

Explain how and why you can excel in a degree taught in English. Think about your current or previous studies, school clubs/societies, hobbies or interests where you’ve had to use English.

12. Mature Students

Write down everything you’ve done since leaving full or part-time education - this includes work experience placements; charity or voluntary work; previous qualifications; hobbies, interests or other activities you take part in during your spare time.

Look at your notes - what knowledge, skills and experiences can you use as evidence to support your application?

If you’re currently studying on a course, how does this relate to the degree you’re applying for?
