Task 11 Put the verbs in brackets into the correct Active or Passive tense.

Note that modal verbs are followed by active or passive infinitives. e.g.: I have to do it. – It has to be done.

Obligation is expressed by modal verbs ‘must’ and ‘have to’.

- use ‘have to’ to describe rules and laws and to speak about routine: You have to be 18 to get married. You don’t have to be 18 to go to a disco. The course paper has to be finished by the end of the month. I have to get up early.

- Use ‘must’ to show what the speaker thinks is necessary, strong advice and recommendations: You must work hard. This book must not be removed from the library. I must get a present for my mum. It’s her birthday soon.

- The past form of both verbs is ‘had to’: They didn’t have to work at all. Survivors of the crash had to be rescued by helicopter.

- The negative forms are different in meaning: You don’t have to come. = It’s not necessary (Можеш не приходити.) You mustn’t come. = It’s not allowed. (Ти не повинен приходити.)

Advice is expressed by modal verbs ‘should’ and ‘ought to’.

- ‘should’ is more common: You should read his new book. White wine, not red, should be served with fish.

- ‘ought to’ is more emphatic: You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Teen crime ought to be reduced.

- ‘must’ is used to express strong advice: There's a new Indian restaurant just opened that you must go to.

- Ability and permission are expressed by ‘can’/ ‘could’.

- use ‘can’/ ‘could’ to speak about ability: I can ski. I couldn’t read until I was six: The boxes can be stored flat.

- use ‘can’/ ‘could’ to say whether it’s allowed to do smth or not: You can't park here - it's a no parking zone.
