BRIEF OVERWIEW Kyiv is one of the biggest cities in Europe, with a developed transport infrastructure. There are different modes of transport that will enable you to get to any place in the city, country or the whole world. When moving within the city, you can use the public transport, namely: trolleybuses, buses, shuttle buses (marshrutkas) and the underground/subway, or take a taxi to reach the destination quickly and comfortably. To travel within the country you can use airplane or train, and the river transport as well. In order to get acquainted with the routes of public transport, in special booths or in subway you can buy a map with special additions devoted to the routes of all modes of public transport. A passenger fare here is as follows: the fare for shuttle bus is from 2.5 to 4 UAH, the ticket for subway is 2 UAH, and a trolley or bus you can take only for 2 UAH.

TRAMS, TROLLEYBUSES

Trams are probably the least used mode of transport in the city. Although there are still tracks in the city center, there are only two working lines - one on each bank. They are mainly used by commuters to the suburbs. Trolleybuses are also favoured by schoolchildren, the working people and babushkas and dedushkas. They won’t get you anywhere in a hurry, but they do provide an intriguing look into everyday Ukrainian life. Single tickets for trolleys, trams and buses can be purchased for 1.50Hr from street kiosks or from conductors and the driver on board. You should immediately validate your ticket using one of the many punching gadgets around you. If not, you risk being intimidated into paying a 40Hr fine by not one but two roaming inspectors. All tickets are good for one journey only. 30 day pass for trolleys, trams and buses cost 160Hr. 30 day combo-pass for all types of surface transport can also be bought at kiosks and go for 230Hr. It will cost you 1.50 Hyrvnia to go either by tram or trolleybus. You can also buy a monthly pass from street kiosks or from the conductor on board. If you regularly use both trolleybus and metro then buy a unified monthly pass.

Kyiv Metro is without a doubt the fastest, most convenient, affordable and indispensable way to get around nearly all of the city. It is the subway that you can take to get to the destination quickly and cheaply. This mode of transport is especially popular for its speed, regularity of trains and the uniqueness of each station. It is expanding to meet an ever increasing number of users - currently estimated at one and half million passengers per day. However, it can be quite unpleasant during rush hours as it gets so crowded. That is usually between 7 and 8 am and 5 and 6pm. An interesting fact is that the deepest station in the world is laid here. “Arsenalna” is a belowground station (105, 5 meters) which was opened in 1960. Kyiv Metro connects the left and right bank of the city and carries out transportation of 50% passengers of the city passenger traffic. It has 52 operating stations§ that have unique decorations, three lines and thus 3 transfer hubs. Metro Fare The ride is paid by tokens and contactless cards when entering the metro. A single ride costs 2 UAH regardless of destination and time spent in the metro. Tokens can be bought from cashier or automatic exchange machines (wall mounted dispensers) at all stations. The tokens are valid for one ride but include changing lanes. Travel cards for unlimited rides for one or half of a month can be purchased from cashier at all stations. Travel cards for limited rides can be purchased from cashier and recharged at the cash-desk or by using a terminal.

Funicular One unique mode of public transportation Kyiv can boast is the Funicular (Foo-knee-koo'ler), which climbs up the steep right bank of the Dnipro River. It transports 10,000-15,000 passengers daily and connects the Center with the Podil District. The ticket costs 2.00 UAH. The length of the rail tracks is 193 meters. TAXI If you need to reach any point of the city or beyond quickly, you can take a taxi. This is the most comfortable and convenient mode of transport, but at the same time quite expensive. This mode of transport in Kyiv is very well developed. There are a lot of taxi services in the capital of Ukraine that transport passengers, and provide various related services as well, for example transportation of goods, lease of a limousine etc. In addition, you can use a taxi to reach the destination both within Kyiv and beyond. You can hail a taxi in the street or order it by phone but remember that if you order by phone as a rule the trip will be cheaper. The fares are negotiated in advance if a taxi is taken in the street. If you aren’t firm and fail to negotiate the price beforehand, your taxi fare will skyrocket. At our site in the section «Useful numbers»§ you can find telephone numbers to call a taxi. The minimal fare is 20 UAH.
